US tomato Salmonella outbreak reports rise to 228*

LOS ANGELES, June 12 (Reuters) - U.S. food safety officials said on
Thursday the number of reported cases of Salmonella poisoning from
tomatoes increased to 228 in 23 states, up from Wednesday's 167 reported
cases from 17 states.

The new infections were reported in Florida, Georgia, Missouri, New
York, Tennessee and Vermont, said Ian Williams, chief of the OutbreakNet
Team at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Twenty-five people have been hospitalized as a result of the U.S.
outbreak, which has been linked to raw plum, Roma and round tomatoes.
