Thunder storms, bursting river banks and flash floods caused chaos
across the country yesterday, with the unsettled weather expected to
continue over the next few days.

A major hunt was launched for a teenage soldier feared drowned after he
was washed away in a swollen river near Catterick, North Yorkshire. In
Northern Ireland such was the damage caused by relentless rain over the
last few days that the Stormont Executive announced emergency payments
of £1,000 for each household affected.

Elsewhere, 100 factory workers were trapped upstairs in a building in
Minworth, Warwickshire, after the ground floor flooded with water levels
reaching six feet. Train travel was severely disrupted and commuters on
many of England's motorways reported long delays. All over the country
motorists had to be rescued from their cars, including a kidney dialysis
patient who had to be winched from her vehicle en route to hospital.

Heavy rain was expected to continue overnight in many parts before
easing today.
