Media tycoon Lord Black guilty of fraud*
CHICAGO (AFP) - - Deposed media tycoon Conrad Black was found guilty
Friday of three counts of fraud and one of obstruction of justice, at
the end of a complex trial.
Black was however cleared of eight charges of fraud and one of
racketeering related to the misuse of perks and the sale of newspapers
in Canada.
The 62-year-old British lord showed little emotion as he was convicted
on the charges, after a long running trial which began in March.
But he faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in jail on the obstruction
of justice conviction. The fraud convictions carry a maximum penalty of
five years.
The ruthless businessman, who turned his back on his native Canada to
become a British lord and steer what was once the world's third largest
newspaper empire from London, maintained his innocence throughout the
trial.
