Bluetongue Virus found in fifth UK animal*

Last Updated: 11:58pm BST 27/09/2007

A fifth animal has tested positive for the deadly Bluetongue virus,
prompting fears of a full-blown outbreak.

The latest case was found on a farm in Burstall, Suffolk, and the animal
was culled.

It is the fourth premises to be infected with the virus, which is spread
by midges, and is four miles from the site of the first outbreak, on the
outskirts of Ipswich.

Officials at the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs
have put in place control measures spanning nine counties.
