Flash floods in Philippines turn deadly*
MANILA, Philippines (AP) -- Authorities say flash floods have killed two
men and sent 1,000 residents fleeing their southern Philippine riverside
village.
The mayor of southern Bansalan township, Edwin Reyes, said Friday about
15 stranded residents were rescued from a tiny river islet when the
water suddenly rose several feet high.
A squall followed by a heavy downpour triggered the flash floods, which
have destroyed at least 50 houses, according to Reyes.
He says that 200 families had to be evacuated to a gymnasium and five
panicked residents, including children, were slightly injured in a rush
to flee.
