Slovakia Suffers Severe Storm Damage*

BRATISLAVA, June 22 (AFP) Jun 22, 2007

Slovak hospitals, emergency services and public services were coping
Friday with the aftermath of high winds and storms that swept through
the Central European country.

Strong winds accompanied by downpours uprooted trees and ripped off
roofing tiles on Thursday, with the west of the country among the worst
affected areas.

Of around a dozen people admitted to hospital, one was in a
life-threatening situation after being hit by lightning, Bratislava
Hospital spokeswoman Rut Gerzova told the Sita news agency.

Trains were severely disrupted with some services delayed by up to three
hours following the storms. Power supplies were also cut, especially in
the centre of the country, the local electricity distributor said.

Storms also hit the neighbouring Czech Republic, with one electricity
supplier declaring a "calamity situation" after power lines were severed.
