ABOUT 6.5 million people attended this year's pagan Oktoberfest beer
festival in Munich, but the city's mayor said he was concerned about a
rise in alcohol-fuelled violence.
Thirsty visitors from all over the world consumed 6.1 million of the
one-litre “Mass” glasses of beer, a rise of almost five per cent
compared with last year when the festivities were two days shorter.
Alongside the mountains of sausages guzzled down, 102 roast oxen were
also eaten - seven more than last year.
Mayor Christian Ude said a rise in fighting and what he called “misuse
of beer glasses” had cast a “tiny shadow” over the event.
Gerhard Beyer, the official in charge of security for the event, said
there had been 137 injuries as a result of violence compared with 110
cases last year.
Most were caused by beer glasses being thrown, but in one more serious
incident, two people were lucky to escape with their lives, he said.
