HONG Kong authorities have ordered a recall of Chinese-made face and
body paints because they contain high levels of toxic substances, the
latest in a wave of recalls of Chinese toys.
The customs department recalled the face and body paint sets, called
SixColors, saying it contained excessive amounts of lead, chromium and
barium.
It said the lead content exceeded safety limits by as much as 25 times.
The products, which were marked "non-toxic'' on their package, were
"found to have a high risk of poisoning children", the department said.
The wholesaler of the products, designed for children under three years
old, could not be reached for comment. It was not clear how many of the
sets were on the market.
Chinese-made products ranging from seafood to car tires have been
targeted in a spate of overseas safety recalls this year, with toys in
the spotlight in recent months, casting doubt about the safety of
China-made products.
China is the world's top toy exporter, selling 22 billion toys overseas
last year, or 60 per cent of the globe's total.
