Swiss Synagogue Fire Set Deliberately*

GENEVA -- A fire that damaged Geneva's largest synagogue was set
deliberately, according to results of an investigation announced Friday.

"The cause of the fire was criminal," said magistrate Michel Graber, who
is overseeing the investigation into the May 24 fire, in a written
statement.

The arson fire, which gutted the interior of Hekhal Haness Synagogue,
raised fears among Switzerland's Jewish community, but Graber said there
is no indication that it was set by extremists.

The investigation ruled out an accident or technical problem as the
cause, Graber said, but authorities have no suspect in the case.
