Raging Floods strand Romania villagers

At least 1,400 villagers have been stranded in northern Romania amid
heavy rains that caused rivers to overflow, killing a 19-year-old man.

The 17th-Century Sambata de Sus monastery was evacuated in the floods,
which also cut power to 130 villages in the north and east of the
country.

Six of Romania's 41 counties have been affected, with authorities
warning that seven more counties were in danger.

The rain comes after three days of high temperatures of up to 40C.

In the villages of Moldovita and Vatra Moldovita, 1,400 villagers were
stranded as flooding turned dirt roads into mud, local official
Alexandru Baisanu told Associated Press news agency.

The 19-year-old man drowned when a car he was driving in fell into the
Lucava River.

Swollen rivers also caused flooding in six towns in central Romania.

In Brasov county, tourists were evacuated from the Sambata de Sus
monastery 200km (125 miles) north-west of the capital, Bucharest.
