50,000 head of stock lost in Australian storm*

AUSTRALIA - STOCK losses caused by a fierce storm that lashed southeast
Western Australia earlier this month has been put at about 50,000.

It was initially estimated that 20,000 stock died, mostly of exposure,
during the storm that formed when ex-cyclone Isobel combined with a
surface trough to create a deep low pressure system early this month.

A spokeswoman for the WA Department of Agriculture said the number was
unlikely to rise much higher than 50,000 because its damage assessment
was nearly done.

WA authorities believe the damage bill will be in the tens of millions
once surveys are finalised.
