Peres sworn in as Israel's president*
JERUSALEM (AFP) - - Israel's elder statesman and Nobel peace laureate
Shimon Peres was sworn in president on Sunday, crowning an unrivaled
career stretching back half a century.
Peres assumes the largely ceremonial post less than three weeks shy of
his 84th birthday, replacing the disgraced Moshe Katsav, and will serve
a seven-year term as Israel's ninth president.
