At least 40 people have died in northern India in a week of unseasonal
heavy rains and floods.

In the worst-hit state of Uttar Pradesh the toll has reached 33, while
seven people have died elsewhere.

"Three persons died of rain-related incidents overnight taking the toll
to 33 in the last one week," said Surendra Srivastava, a police
spokesman in Lucknow, capital of Uttar Pradesh, where schools are to
shut today and tomorrow.

Rain and sleet have disrupted traffic and telephone services across the
state, which has a population of 180 million.

Four people died as a result of lightning and a house collapse in the
western desert state of Rajasthan earlier this week.

A homeless man was found dead in northern Jammu town, winter capital of
Kashmir state.

Two people died in lightning strikes in Punjab state, the Press Trust of
India reported.
