Extreme Wild Weather Batters Australia Again*

EXTREMELY SEVERE storms hit Queensland again today as the clean-up
continued from a week of extreme weather, including what has been
described as a "mini tornado".

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a number of severe weather
warnings. Several storms have started to hit parts of southeast and
central Queensland.

A bureau spokesman said damaging winds and large hailstones were moving
towards Brisbane from the west this afternoon, while parts of the Gold
and Sunshine coasts could also be hit by more severe weather.

A severe storm cell hit the town of Mitchell in southwest Queensland
about 11pm (AEST) yesterday, ripping roofs from buildings and causing
extensive damage.

Two homes and an industrial shed were unroofed, six more homes partially
lost their roofs, while a further 13 buildings were damaged.

Local State Emergency Service (SES) controller Alan Lemon said the
powerful storm was like a "mini tornado" ripping through the town.

"It was a devastating storm for the people who lost their roofs because
everything they owned then got soaked," Mr Lemon said.

The clean-up effort was also continuing around Tara and Jandowae, west
of Brisbane, following severe storms on Wednesday night.

An Energex spokesman said 160,000 homes and businesses in southeast
Queensland had lost power at some stage since Sunday, for an average of
two hours.
