LINCOLN, Neb. - Hail, tornadoes, damaging winds and heavy rain have left
Nebraska a bit beaten up this weekend.
Storms that dropped over three inches of rain in central Nebraska and
produced tornadoes in the Panhandle swept across the state late Friday
into Saturday. And forecasts for the reminder of the weekend call for
much of the same.
The National Weather Service said firefighters reported a tornado about
three miles north of Paxton in Keith County.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
Straight-line winds in excess of 70 mph and hail the size of golf balls
seemed to be the bigger threat.
Buffalo County Emergency Management officials reported a metal building
was destroyed in Shelton around 10:50 p.m. Friday.
Buffalo County also was left soaked, picking up 3.25 inches of rainfall
from the storm and the deluge continued on into eastern Nebraska.
Omaha, Columbus and Schuyler each picked up more than two inches of
rain, while Lincoln received 1.72 inches early Saturday.
Forecasters say the risk for severe weather remains, although central
and eastern Nebraska could be the ones feeling the brunt of it.
But despite the downpours, there's not yet a strong risk of flooding, at
least in eastern areas, said forecaster Barbara Mayes with the Weather
Service's office in Valley.
"We've been so dry that the ground around here can take quite a bit of
moisture," she said.
