Japan braces for typhoon
*
TOKYO, Aug 17 (AFP) Aug 17, 2006

Japan braced Thursday for Typhoon Wukong which was moving slowly toward
the southern island of Kyushu and was expected to bring heavy rain.

Typhoon Wukong, packing winds of 83 kilometers (51 miles) per hour, was
about 130 kilometers (80 miles) southeast of Miyazaki city in Kyushu at
2:00 pm (0500 GMT), the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

The season's 10th typhoon was heading west at 15 kilometers (nine miles)
an hour and it is expected to cause heavy rainfall on the Japanese
islands of Kyushu and Shikoku, the agency said.

"The typhoon is moving slowly, so it may cause heavy rain as it is
likely to stay in the same area," said an agency official.

"But the typhoon may change its course and pass over the water," he said.

The Pacific coasts of Kyushu and Shikoku can expect 300 to 350
millimeters (12 to 14 inches) of rain by midnight, he said.
