Electricity monitor issues 'power warning' as heat wave bakes Ontario*

TORONTO (CP) - The agency that monitors electricity use in Ontario has
issued a "power warning" and is asking consumers to cut back on
electricity use today.

The warning was issued as Ontario remains in the grip of a heat wave
compounded by humidity which makes it feel like the low 40s.

Terry Young of the Independent Electricity System Operator says demand
for electricity could see Ontario surpass the record of 26,160 megawatts
set on July 13, 2005.

He says the peak demand later in the day could reach 26,900 megawatts,
due largely to air conditioners, which consume at least 25 per cent of
the total output.

Young recommends consumers keep their air conditioners in the 26 degree
range, use fans to keep cool, keep blinds and curtains closed and avoid
using major appliances such as dishwashers between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m.

The power warning is in effect until 8 p.m.
