AN earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 on the Richter scale struck waters
close to the border between Japan and Russia, but there was no threat of
a tsunami, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
The quake, which hit about 2.50am Japanese time (0350 AEST), shook the
sea close to the Kuril Islands, which are part of Russian territory, the
agency said.
The quake, at a depth of 10 kilometres, was located in the Pacific Ocean
about 100km south of the islands.
There was no immediate report of damage or casualties in Japanese
territory, a local Government official said.
