ACAPULCO, Mexico -- A tropical depression unleashed heavy rain and
crashing waves on the Mexican resort city of Acapulco on Wednesday,
flooding streets and forcing authorities to close the port to small boats.
The depression was centered about 100 miles off Mexico's Pacific coast
and moving northwest at 12 mph according to the U.S. National Hurricane
Center in Miami. Winds of up to 35 mph sent 6-foot waves onto Acapulco's
beaches.
Several streets were flooded with as much as 16 inches of water _
including the beachside Costera Miguel Aleman, which runs past many of
the resort's luxury hotels.
There was also some flooding at the Acapulco airport, although service
was not interrupted.
