THOUSANDS of people gathered in eastern India to pray to a girl born
with tumours resembling extra limbs, believing her to be an incarnation
of a multi-armed goddess.
The girl was born several weeks ago in the eastern state of Bihar.
“People from far-flung areas have started to pour into the village after
hearing that the reincarnation of the goddess Durga was born here,”
police superintendent Amit Kumar Jain said.
The eight-armed goddess, Durga, who symbolises the victory of good over
evil and is depicted as a warrior woman carrying weapons in her hands,
is worshipped by millions of Hindus in eastern India.
Worshippers brought flowers, fruits and money for the baby who has been
kept wrapped in a red cloth on a cot in a thatched hut in Bihar's Diuri
village.
The girl's impoverished father could not afford to take her to hospital
to have doctors examine her.
