Up to 16 killed in Pakistan flood*
ISLAMABAD, June 17 (AFP) Jun 17, 2007
A flash flood triggered by torrential rains killed up to 16 people and
injured around 60 others in a remote mountain village of northwestern
Pakistan, officials said Sunday.
The flood on Saturday also destroyed 30 houses and partially damaged
around 70 others in Swat valley's Bedara village, some 200 kilometres
(125 miles) northwest of Islamabad, senior administration official Syed
Muhammad Javed told AFP.
"Fourteen people are confirmed dead and two others are still missing,"
Javed said, adding that about half the casualties were children.
He said rescue teams were clearing the debris and the injured were being
treated at hospital.
The official said the disaster occurred because the villagers had built
their homes on the bed of a seasonal stream and more than 500 people had
lost their shelters.
