Philippine volcano spews ash, covers four villages*

MANILA, Oct 23 (AFP) Oct 23, 2006

A volatile volcano in the eastern Philippines spewed a column of ash a
kilometre (about half-a-mile) high in a sudden explosion on Monday,
covering four villages in soot.

Villagers were warned of further dangerous activity from Mount Bulusan,
which has already belched giant clouds of smoke and ash twice this month.

On Monday, the ash drifted on to homes southeast and southwest of the
1,565-metre (5,133-feet) volcano, according to the government's
vulcanology bureau.

"The activity was reflected in the seismograms as a small explosion
quake" which lasted for over three minutes, the bureau said.

Residents around Bulusan, in Sorsogon province some 250 kilometers (155
miles) southeast of Manila, were advised to take precautions, especially
those near river channels which often attract lava flows.

The volcano has erupted at least 15 times since 1886, most recently in
1995.
