A bomb exploded inside a car in the Israeli city of Rishon Letzion
today, killing the vehicle's driver.
Up to six other people were wounded in the blast, which came with the
country on high alert two days before Yom Kippur.
Police said it appeared to be the work of criminals rather than
terrorists, adding that the bomb had been placed to target the driver
rather than inflict wider casualties.
The explosion happened at a busy road junction in Rishon Letzion, which
is south of Tel Aviv, rescue services said. Cars at the junction and
buildings up to 200 meters away were damaged.
Bomb experts were analysing the scene, and one report said the blast
victim was known to police as a criminal.
Israel traditionally tightens security efforts in the run-up to major
Jewish holidays, when Palestinian suicide bombers have previously
carried out attacks.
