Turkish authorities battling forest fires evacuated hundreds of tourists
visiting the purported home of the Virgin Mary in the ancient ruins of
Ephesus yesterday. The tiny stone house at Ephesus is believed by some
to be the last home of Jesus's mother.
Strong winds brought flames closer, forcing an evacuation by buses,
authorities said. Some tourists left on foot, according to private TV
channels CNN-Turk and NTV.
A local forestry official in the area said the flames were under control
and posed no threat to the house, which is visited each year by tens of
thousands of superstitious "Virgin Mary" Worshipping pilgrims.
