Five die as Greece Blistering heat wave moves in*
ATHENS, June 19 (AFP) Jun 19, 2007
Five people have died at Greek beaches at the onset of a week-long heat
wave that has prompted a public health warning against unnecessary travel.
The victims, aged 63 to 80, included four Greek men and an unidentified
foreign woman. They apparently drowned whilst swimming at beaches around
the country, the merchant marine ministry said Tuesday.
Temperatures in Greece this weekend are expected to hit 40 degrees
celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit), a high normally seen in July and
August, prompting fears of power outages due to increased use of air
conditioners.
The health ministry is warning the public to avoid unnecessary journeys,
and placing hospitals on alert.
