MORE than 25,000 homes have lost power this afternoon as a line of
severe storms pass across south-east Queensland.
A massive storm front stretching from south of Toowoomba across
south-east Queensland and into northern New South Wales hit at around
1pm (AEST) before moving quickly towards the coast.
An Ergon Energy spokesman said a lightning strike on Ergon Energy's main
110,000-volt supply line from Middle Ridge to Warwick cut supply to the
region's bulk supply substation at 1.10pm (AEST) resulting in the loss
of power to 15,000 homes.
More lightning strikes cut power to a further 5500 homes.
Around Ipswich and Gatton, south-west of Brisbane, 32 lightning strikes
were registered by Energex between 2.30pm and 3.30pm (AEST), taking out
power to more than 3500 homes, an Energex spokesman said.
The Ipswich suburbs of Blackstone, Booval, Flinders View, Raceview and
Silkstone were worst affected.
Large hailstones were recorded in Toowoomba but the State Emergency
Service said there had not yet been any reports of major damage.
However, a spokeswoman said most families would not find damage to their
homes until they returned home from work in the evening.
