Wave of Car Bombings Kills 6 in Algeria*

The Associated Press

ALGIERS, Algeria -- A wave of car bombings and other attacks killed six
people and injured 13 in Algeria on Tuesday, the official news agency
reported.

There were at least seven bombings, the APS agency said. Two of the dead
and 10 of the injured were police officers, the agency said.

The government did not say who it believed was behind the attacks, nor
were there any immediate claims of responsibility.

However, an al-Qaida-aligned Islamic insurgent group, the Salafist Group
of Call and Combat, is active in Algeria.

Although whittled down to a few hundred members, the group carries out
regular bomb attacks in Algeria and raises funds in Europe for
al-Qaida's operations in Iraq.

In December, the group staged a daring bomb attack on buses carrying
foreign workers of an affiliate of U.S. energy services giant
Halliburton, killing an Algerian bus driver and wounding nine others.
