FIREFIGHTERS backed by helicopters have struggled to put out several
major forest blazes across Bulgaria, Macedonia, Greece and Spain's
Canary Islands.
In Bulgaria, 23,000 hectares of woodland have been burnt down during the
past week and fires continue to rage in the south and centre today.
Bulgarian police have arrested 20 people on suspicion of starting the fires.
In Greece, five fires were burning today in the north-western areas of
Ioannina, Florina, Kozani, Pieria and Thesprotia, where 300 firefighters
were deployed to control them.
Fires which have been burning in recent days in other parts of the
country appeared to be dying down, Greek officials said.
Four people have been arrested on suspicion of deliberately setting the
fires.
In Macedonia, a new fire broke out yesterday near the Jasen national
park in the north-west and two German helicopters from a peacekeeping
force in Kosovo were sent to help put it out.
In the breakaway UN-run province of Serbia, three new fires were spotted
near Kosovo's capital Pristina.
