Torrential rains kill 30 in eastern China*

BEIJING, July 16 (AFP) Jul 16, 2007

Torrential rains in eastern China over the weekend left 30 people dead
and nearly 600,000 homeless, state press said Monday, amid warnings of
more bad weather.

The downpours in China's Anhui province, which had already suffered from
severe flooding this year, also led to 60,000 homes being inundated and
300,000 people left short of clean drinking water, the Xinhua news
agency said.

Officials warned of worse to come, with water levels on the Huaihe river
in Anhui nearing dangerous threshholds and more heavy rain expected.

More than 300,000 soldiers have been dispatched to the flood afflicted
areas in Anhui in relief efforts.

Xinhua's latest figures, published on Friday, put the death toll from
this year's flood season across eastern and central China at 403 people
with 105 missing. Another 3.17 million people have been left homeless.
