My friend (who read this list and have a fantastic sense of humor)
knows a bit of my particular area of expertise and current occupation.
So when she came across this posting on CraigsList, she immediately
contacted me to let me know that this guy was desperately in need of
my services. Below is the full posting from CraigsList:

I've been trying to think of ways to spice up my life. I'm 35 years
old, happily married with two kids and I have a good job in insurance.
But somethings missing. I feel like I'm old before my time. I need to
inject some excitement into my daily routine through my arm before its
too late. I need a challenge, something to get the adrenaline pumping
again. An addiction would be nice, but, in short, I need a nemesis.
I'm willing to pay $350 up front for you services as an arch enemy
over the next six months. Nothing crazy. Steal my parking space, knock
my coffee over, trip me when Im running to catch the BART and
occasionaly whisper in my ear, "Ahha, we meet again". That kind of
thing. Just keep me on my toes. Complacency will be the death of me.
You need to have an evil streak and be blessed with innate guile and
cunning. You should also be adept at inconsicuous pursuit. Evil laugh
preferred. Send me a photo and a brief explanation why you would be a
good nemesis.

British accent preferred.

* it's NOT ok to contact this poster with services or other
commercial interests
* Compensation: $350 up front

---

Unfortunately he's in the San Francisco Bay area, but I let him know
if he's even in LA that he can count on it being an interesting trip.
The email also contained a number of nasty viruses, and I'm
considering poisoning his upstream DNS (thanks Dan!!!) so that his
gmail redirects to pr0n sites. I consider it a freebie... ;)

What is this thing "too much Venture Brothers" you speak of? I do not
think such a thing exists.

Hey Travis,

Are you related to Dr. Horrible? ( http://www.drhorrible.com/ ).  I think you might get more work in this line if you hired yourself a henchman and got a spiffy outfit.

We are unrelated except in profession, and even then I do not like
being compared to wannabes like Doogie Houser... he thinks too small.
If we're going with purely fictional characters, Lex Luthor is a much
more appropriate comparison. I have a few henchmen, three cohorts, one
trusted lieutenant, two sidekicks, several arch-rivals, a right hand
man, an evil queen, and even a hostage. I am however fresh out of
lackys, if you'd like to apply for the job, Marty.

The spiffy outfit is still on the rack at the costume shop, awaiting
my next paycheck. But it will be mine! [attachment: evil_laugh.mp3]

(P.S. You can contact any and all of them at their

Yes, they really do forward to real people's emails. For titles with
spaces, remove the space (I'm evilg...@nefariousplan.com), for
seconds and thirds add a number (henc...@nefariousplan.com,
henc...@nefariousplan.com, etc.). If you'd like your own
@nefariousplan.com email, you should consider joining the team too.
Send all inquiries and plans for global domination to

Hmmm.. do you have a kool icegun or other interesting weapon?  Ehh, perhaps you are just a gang instead of a supper villian?

Then again world domination is a good path, I have been working on that in my spare time as well.  I even considered you for the henchman job, I even have a nice sidekick name picked out.  How do you feel about "Pinky"?

Laugh while you still can, when your worth is measured in kilojoules I'll be the one laughing... all the way to the energy bank!

Ya know I never did buy that part of the matrix.  We really are energy sinks rather than sources.  When you consider how much energy we leek we are terribly inefficient.  You would do better with a solar collector.

So if your plan revolves around milking primates for energy... uhm.  Well Dr. Evil, have you considered that you may be in the wrong line of work?

I cant believe im gonna take the bait on this one and nerd out for a
second, but...

at one point everything WAS solar powered, and that's how the machine's
got their energy. we scorched the skies to prevent that in hopes of
killing them off. the machine's had to find new sources of energy to
survive. they found a way harness (harvest) us to make that happen.

wow. I feel like I just nerded out on a star trek level on matrix
philosophy there for a second. :-P

I've been in sekret talks with the Supreme Commander to actually bring
this back to LA sooner than later. And I hear it's happening at BRC

Hi Chris,

Yeah I never bought that part of the Matrix.  That somehow their programming and curiosity might prompt them to keep us in the maze I might have gone fore, but energy source, NOT.

Not at all, my fiction-loving friend. Milking primates for energy is
agreeably the stuff of science fiction.

The plan I speak of is just one small part of my larger scheme for
global domination, and involves replacing the current forms of
currency with a universal one... one that make sense in a global
economy and does not suffer from massive inflation based upon material
ownership, but rather is technology driven and measured in efficiency
rather than quantity so it can extend itself to a space-faring race,
and even to non-human races, should we later encounter them. Current
attempts at this have yielded very unsatisfactory solutions (who wants
to carry a plastic disc in their wallet?) because they did not
properly contextualize the real needs of a global economy, let alone a
universal one. Modern economics are full of holes and bad assumptions
whoThis particular scheme is especially diabolical because it's
undeniable and irresistible when implemented properly; You won't have
a choice in the matter of how it ends up... no one will, if it's done
correctly.

You can't take over the world unless you can change how business is
done, so starting with a currency change is a perfectly logical step.
More details I will not reveal, for I too have learned from movies
that telling the world your secrets right before you execute on your
diabolical scheme never works out in your favor.

And here you thought I was joking, or at least not to be taken
seriously... Keep laughing buddy! We will see who laughs the longest.
20 years from now, I think you'll be singing a different tune. ;)

The value of any substance is transient and based on supply, demand and perceived value. That is why we moved to conceptual currencies like the Dollar that are not backed by fluctuating natural resources like gold.

Energy, like gold, fluctuates based on supply and demand.  When we do move onto becoming a space inhabiting species, energy may become the least of our concerns.

In the end currency is a lubricant for transactions that allows us to arbitrarily place value on objects that fluctuate for exchange purposes. The future of economic transactions does not depend on the name of the transactional lubricant we use or whether it has any physical manifestation.

For a fun expose on how value and currency might evolve when we transition to a plenty/free economy I suggest people read "Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom" by Corey Doctorow.

Now that we have dispensed with the currency double talk... what was your evil plan again?  Something about snookering people into believing that you could create a universal currency?  I imagine you could convince the people that think we should be on a gold standard or buy from QVC, but that just seams like cheep thrills.

I am sure you can do better than steeling from the blind, can't you?

LOL I'll see your doubt and raise your two paranoia!

I don't need to snooker anyone into anything. As I mentioned the best
part is it's undeniable and irresistible, which means I don't need to
convince anyone of anything. There's no double speak here, everything
you said about economics and currency is true. If part of my plan was
convincing anyone of anything, I wouldn't be trying to do it on the
BarCamp mailing list.

My plan is to rewrite the rules of business economics by dropping many
of the old assumptions upon which the current system has been
established and establishing a new system which will stand the test of
time. Convincing anyone of this is not a requirement... my plan does
not require your belief. The future of economics cares nothing for the
name of the lubricant as you pointed out, or it's users, simply on the
reliability of the mechanism and the ease with which it can be
utilized... how slick the lube is if you will. Produce something which
eliminates the problems seen today and replaces it with a whole new
set of much more desirable problems, and the rest will happen on it's
own. It's a long term plan, don't knock it until you've seen it in
action.

In the mean time keep shaking your head, and I'll keep doing the same
back. ;)
