Hi All,
After a little deliberation me and Dinesh are anouncing a ~ 100Kms MTB (On road) race. The plan is as following

Date : 19/7/2008 (Saturday)
Time of reporting : 5:30 AM
Time of staring : 6:00 AM
Start Point : Around 1 KM from Hebbal Flyover towards Devanhalli on the left side
End point : Same as above
Point of return : The Nandihills (Palace Gate)
Race will be considered off at : 12 AM (So you get 6 Hours to complete the race)

Important : You have to wear a Paper tag stating following things
1. Name :
2. Blood Group :
3. Emergency Contact Number :

What to bring :
1. Helmet (Mandated, not allowed wothout it)
2. Whatever you may need on the way to eat and drink (No support provided by us in these terms)
    - Water
    - Electral
    - Banans / Things you would like to eat on the run
    - Energy Bars /  drinks
    - Puncture kit / small repair kit
    - Mind you, the more you bring the slower you will be, so do it optimally.

What is arranged :
Dinesh has volenteered to arrange for Emergency-car, where he can pitch in to help in case of medical emergency or so ( will publish Contact info soon)

In case of broken bike, you will have to arrange for your own transportation back.

We as organizers dont take any reponsiblity of any injury during the race, and you are participating at your own risk.

What does it cost : Nothing .... ! ( YES, Best things in life comes for free)
The plan is to make such races as regular event, at different places in and around Bangalore. Since this is first of it's kind (Not so organized) in Bangalore, we have chosen a very common route as we dont have to navigate, and dont need any special equipment for the same. We plan to have off-road races after we make this race a success.
Thanks and Regards,
~Ravi and Dinesh

Awesome effort! This can spread the word for cycling like little else can!

But, sorry to play the devil's advocate, but just like 9motor)bikers, does this not need clearances etc ? There's traffic involved, after all, and 30kmph isn't that slow.

All big things starts with somthing likde this, we dont have resources.
Do you think you will be able to do somthing about the traffic on the same route? If you can, please write just to me, we will see if we can do somthing.

Not sure about clearances - but early start would mean less traffic.
But on the way back can't avoid it. Move the end point a bit earlier
maybe?

Rgds,
Dinesh.

Oops, sorry,
This was only wrt something that had gone wrong with a biker on one of the biking fora earlier this year. They had a run-in with the cops who charged them with racing/reckless riding on public roads. I'm not even sure if or how this applies to bicycles. In case someone does have contacts or knowhow - it might be worth a shot.
Don't think its a big deal, in any case.
Rgds,
Sameer

Hey Ravi,Dinesh,

Nice initiative! Count me in for the race.

One more suggestion for the race track is Khaglipura - Bannerghatta - NICE road in loop.

START:
Closed down Family mart(junction) - > NICE road junction : 8KM

LOOP:
NICE road Junction - Khaglipura : 6 KM
Khaglipura - Bannerghatta : 11 KM
On Bannerghatta road for 4 KM and then take left dirt road to NICE road-> 4 KM
NICE road(Bennerghatta - Kanakapura road stretch) ->  7 KM

Loop total : 28 KM

Can try this loop for any number of times depending on the rider. I have attached a map from our previous BBC rides.

Cheers
Gaurav

Why do such events happen on a Saturday when those roads are filled with Traffic. Don't forget that Saturdy's are off only for IT folks and not for other professions. So the traffic is as bad on a Saturday as on any weekday.

I would suggest you move this to Sunday, because the traffic on Sundays is almost 60%-70% lesser, especially near hebbal/yelahanka and other signals on the way to Nandi-Hills. This will make the ride a lot safer and better.

Ravi,

This is a great idea. I think Nandi is a grand way to start, but the participation will be limited for a number of reasons
- 100 km with a major climb like Nandi will be a little too strenous for most poeple
- Lot of people have a block about cycling on the highway
- A majority of people in this group are from South Bangalore, so just getting to the starting point will be a problem

Since you have already planned this, we should go ahead. For the next time, we could consider a route of around 50 km. One suggestion that I have is to start from Agara Lake, go on the Ring Road till Hebbal flyover and return back to the starting point. If there is interest, we can even convert it to a duathlon by including 3-4 rounds around the lake.

   What do you think?

jagan

Hi Murali,
Please do understand that we had considered that as well, but Dinesh can not be available on Suday, so can not move it. Other option is that You volenteer to take care of the emergency-car, then we can consoder it.
On the other hand, there is no option given to participant to move the dates, this right is only with the Volnteers. I am sorry if i am sounding rude, but this race will not be moved to sunday.
Next time before sending such obvious suggestion, do consider that we would have already delibrated over it.
Looking fwd to see all of you there.
Thanks and Regards,

If car is the only concern, then I can spare my car... provided there is someone to drive it, because I want to do this ride if its on Sunday...

And, moving this to Sunday was just a suggestion, owing to the fact that there will be many participants and too little space to ride during peak hour traffic... whether you want to move it or not is upto you folks.. I have no say in it...

Hi Murali,
Thanks for offering the car, but it is not about the car. It is more about the guy who can manage the show as an medical emergency car. I hope that clarifies.
I am really sorry if i have done any damage to your sentiments, that was never my intention.

Hey Guys,

I am Ashish (Pocha), the other co-ordinator cum participant in
place of Ravi. My no - 9980146460

As Ravi has mentioned - helmets are compulsory. Also its advisable
to carry all your eatables/drinks with you (in a bagpack may be). Its
also good to have eaten something in the morning before you start. A
bottle of electral or gatorade is a must have thing.
Apart from these, try keeping a hanky/arm band. It would come handy
during climbs where there is heavy sweating on face & very less time
to take off from the handle bars.

See you guys tomorrow then.

Ok guys - am wondering if i should join too. Help!

1. is it even possible ? Just did 15kms on day 1 - and since then merely 7km one way to office and 7 back
2. no helmet yet :( spare, anyone ?

I guess its smarter to attempt suchlike after a couple of 30-50km rides, at least.

Gaurav, since there is no registration or such, don't have any numbers
yet. Hoping for a good turnout of around 40 or so people (Ravi's
number :-)). About parking near the starting point - am reasonably
sure there is no parking at that point. Anyone else with info please
share it.

Sameer - yeah, maybe a good idea to put in more kms on the saddle.

Rgds,
Dinesh.

Hi ,
i did biking on this road from hebbal to Devanhalli earlier ....
and i find that the road were not so crowded (the traffic was less )
but the race should start by 6.00 itself since after 9 the density of
people start
increasing ...
Just take things into the account .....

Thanks ,
Om

Same issue here. The max I have cycled is a 33kms at a stretch till now.

I have nevertheless made up my mind to bike till the start of the race which itself would be a 12 km ride from my home in BSK 3rd stage.

My intention is this:

1. meet other bikers
2. check out other bikes - (borrow them for a short ride if possible)
3. check out the accessories - (i don't even have a basic puncture kit with me now!)
4. understand long distance biking/racing from the pros
5. make friends
6. have fun

Lets celebrate life!

Parking, Around one Km from Hebbal Flyover, there are service roads on both the sides and safe enough to park your cars there.
The idea is to have more and more participants, even if you can ride for 10Kms it is fine :-)
I am sorry guys, i am down with Viral and am not able to make it. :-(
I will misss it out, but what i promiss you guys is that next one will be somthing that you wont like to miss. It will be trail race :-)

hi guys,

first time i'm mailing into the group (i'm a novice ie 30k stretches in about 45 mins) so even though i would have loved to ride along you guys on your 100k stint, i'm being a realist and staying away.

anyways the reason for this mail is to let you guys know where to park near the hebbal flyover. one place with very little traffic is the service road just after the army farm )opposite esteem mall) on the left right just after you get off the hebbal flyover (going towards bial).

have a great ride.

cheers

The weather was perfect. Had a reallly good ride.

Lessons i learnt:
1. clean up cycle after muddy rides . I could hear the friction due to the gunk in the chain and gears.
2. Add fenders to save ass and bag painting. The early morning rain added more gunk to the chains as well.
3. redefine 'high' to 'reaaally high' when it comes to 'high-seatpost'.

Thanks to all the volunteers, for making it a fun and hassle-free ride.

Regards,
Sudhir

Congratulations to all the participants who finished the race, I am
sure all who participated but could not finish would have learnt a lot
from this event.

It gives courage to all back benchers like me to atleast try and
participate in the next event happening in Delhi or adjoining place.

I really appreciate you all ... 100Kms is no joke... Hats off to you all.

Hey Sudhir,

It was nice meeting a 6 foot 6 inch figure (i felt like a lilliput). You were amazing with the kind of pace you were taking off. We (Abhin, Pradeep & self) realized you had left your Merida water bottle in my car, hence we drove down to the campus and could not find you. We left the water bottle with the NCBS main gate security office. The security officer's name is Basha.

All,

This was a race of guts, surely should give it to all those who participated (Gaurav, Ashish, Sudhir, Pradeep & Self). In-spite of rain these guys landed up full gear and were ready to ride. That surely is the spirit of the event. We had water, slush all over us until we crossed Yelahanka air base. Pradeep made it to the ride in-spite of this being his first day out on his bike.

Our ride was made easier with the help of Dinesh, Mallik, Abhin & Zaheer. These guys drove as support team all thru serving us with eats, water, fixing bikes, transporting bikes, and also some slip stream for the bikers (hang over of Tour de France)

I am game for more of such events in the future, its really gives you a high in timing your ride irrespective of whether they finish or not, you learn so much by the end of it all.....

Thanks to Ravi and gang for coming up with idea......

The results of the race for the impatient:

Riders :

Pradeep
Sudhir
Raghu
Gaurav
Ashish (Pocha)
Abhin (could not start 'cos of bike problem)

Volunteers:
Mallik
Zaheer
Dinesh

Results:
#1 Gaurav - 4:32
#2 Ashish - 4:42
#3 Sudhir - 5:31

Overall distance was 100 km. Congrats to Gaurav, Ashish and Sudhir,
and
indeed to all the riders!

Now, a more detailed (read as verbose) report of the race as seen from
the support car :-)

The race day dawned bright and sunny - just the kind of weather to
make one jump out of bed and get on the cycle and put in the much-
needed kilometres. Hmm, actually it was dark and rainy and made one
give up whatever hopes one had of a biggist turnout. But had to get
to the start in any case, so half an hour and a hot cup of coffee
later I was in my car on the road. I was at the designated point at
around 4:50 am. The rain had eased off a bit but was still falling.
By the time Abhin & Raghu called in at 5:30 to say they were on the
way, it had almost completely stopped and I'd had a nice mini-cup of
tea.

Abhin & Raghu arrived around 5:40AM and soon got their Trek's out of
the Scorpio. Pradeep was next on his deceptively slim looking bike -
it was heavy! He'd planned to just come up to the start point and meet
up with the rest and then bike back - but he stayed and put in a
creditable performance too. Cramped in the front seatof Gaurav's car
were Gaurav, Ashish & Mallik. Ashish on Ravi's Trek, Gaurav on his
own 4300. Sudhir joined in on his Merida hybrid. Cars parked on the
service road, all got busy putting their bikes together. Abhin had
road tires on his bike and he somehow managed to bend the delicate
Presta valve on the rear wheel. No spare tube - which meant he
couldn't race. A big disappointment for him. The rest of the riders
were all set by 6:30 and were flagged off (without a flag) @ 6:33. We
had a race on our hands after all!

The guys really took off and it was a goodish while before we caught
up with the first of the riders - Pradeep doing well. Ahead were
Raghu, Sudhir, Ashish, with Gaurav leading. We stayed with the leader
and stopped at the Nandi hill road turning on the highway. First to
show up was Gaurav - he'd done the 27 kms under one hour. No stopping
for bananas or electral or plain water for him as he continued on to
the Nandi road. Ten minutes later Ashish was here - no stopping for
him either. Sudhir & Pradeep arrived in a few minutes as did Abhin &
Zaheer in their Scorpio - Raghu had had a run-in with a evil-minded
lorry and had taken a fall - luckily no heavy injuries, and he landed
up at 7:47. A banana each and they were on their way again. Good
going by all concerned!

Mallik & I started off for the Nandi base passing Ashish who was
pedalling away steadily, and then Gaurav. Tea at the the Nandi base
and some Tiger biscuits for us as we waited. Gaurav came by at around
8:15, filled up his water bottle and departed. He was doing the whole
race on two Cadbury's 5 Stars and had finished 1.5 of them. Ashish
was soon there too - he had a banana and some plain water, and was
soon gone, and after waiting a little while, so were Mallik & I.

Mallik predicted a interesting tussle on the hill between Ashish &
Gaurav - as Ashish was very good at climbing. True enough, as he'd
made up the gap between him and Gaurav. The weather was good for
cycling with a heavy cloud cover and the two were hardly breaking a
sweat. Gaurav was first at the top - 8:59 - and first to leave - 8:59
again! Ashish was next at 9:00 - and he too left at 9:00 - no one
wanted to stay even for a minute apparently. Both had done the ascent
in 40 min. Meantime Zaheer called to say Pradeep was dropping out
somewhere near the base. Sudhir pedalled into sight at 9:43, had a
bite of banana, some water and sailed out of sight again.

Down at the base Pradeep was getting his front wheel removed from the
bike for transportation. His cycle went into the Scorpio and he
himself came with us as we headed out on the return stretch. Then the
really mystifying Episode of the Serious Cyclists occurred. All of us
were absolutely flummoxed and did not have a clue. We first saw a lone
cyclist coming towards Nandi. Could he have turned up late at the
starting point and then decided to go it alone in any case? Couldn't
be - or else he would have shown some sign? None of us could recognise
him as he went by grimly, ignoring our quizzical looks without a hint
of recognition or awareness. Then, after we took the right turn onto
the road which goes to the highway, we saw six more of these riders -
all on Trek 3700s - in a row. I waved at one - no response. As
Gaurav, Abhin and others recounted later - they too had the same
experience. No response, and all riders not a bit glum. Who were
they? Why were they doing it? Trek riders who never read BBC or
bikeszone - how was that possible? Mysterious indeed.

Putting that behind us, we hurried on to the end point - having
decided on a point more than 10 km ahead of the starting point
beforehand. As we raced, afraid that Gaurav or Ashish might have
already passed that point, we found nary a trace of either of them.
We sped on hoping against hope. And our hopes were dashed soon -
Gaurav called from Yelahanka asking for guidance. That was a fast
return ride indeed! He wanted to go on to the starting point itself.
We ok'd that and plodded on. We saw Ashish on a service road soon and
updated him that the end point would be where we started off, and put
Zaheer/Abhin in the loop too. As we neared the end point, we caught
sight of Gaurav. And as we parked the car, he had reached the end
point! 10:55. Ashish came in at 11:05. Then Abhin came in - Raghu
had stopped at the Nandi road and Abhin at last got to ride! Zaheer
and Raghu joined us and we waited for Sudhir. Much animated
discussions of the bikes and the Episode followed. Would he come to
the end point or turn off at GKVK (where he stays) itsef? 12:04 and
the suspense ended as we saw him trying to cross the highway.

Overall, a good time was had by all. Thanks to the riders for turning
up inspite of the rain and putting in their best, and congrats to
Pradeep for successfully chewing a lot of what he bit off! And
special thanks to Mallik for volunteering!

Regards,
Dinesh.

Ok, now we know who the mystery riders were. Did look like they were
concentrating on the ride more than anything else.

Got some snaps taken by Mallik, will post them in the evening.

Pradeep should also get the most well-stocked rider award I believe -
in terms of fuel for the trip. But that would have weighed a lot too.

I also happend to carry my GPS and maped my ride.

You can see it here...

http://sportstracker.nokia.com/nts/workoutdetail/index.do?id=305674

This is track from Hebbal Flyover to the Pass between two hills (i.e about 4.5kms to the summit) and back to the base of the hills.

I couldn't go till the summit and dropped out as I had already done about 65 kms from my home till there and was exhausted.

Below the map is the speed/altitude graph too.

ok roadbike will take about 3.5hrs for a hebbal-nandi-hebbal trip...but wind is a major factor,if there is headwind then effort will be much more and time required is far greater..but if we are group of riders on roadbikes then again time required comes down drasticallly and the same trip can be done even under 3 hrs..THATS WHY GUYS pls buy roadbikes and ride with us(me,venkat, samim, dipankar, ravi, etc)
