Today was a nice ride - had to stop at 3 different places for assorted financial paperwork - AND the bike has no lock yet...

It was amazing, not only did the watchmen agree to keep an eye on the bike - they actually stood guard/examined the bike in great detail, and had a whole lot of follow up questions later. One even said "cycling karna acchha hai sir".  The other questions were about the gears, speedo, etc etc

So its turning out to be a conversation starter too Smile

haha ..

Maybe the kids around that village will soon be comparing dérailleur models on the bikes that pass by, instead of just getting excited on seeing a 'gear cycle'

True.

Yesterday got "mobbed" by 3 traffic cops at Sony World while I waited for traffic to pause :)

what is this - battery ? no, lights
geared ? yes, 24
Cost ? 15k
15k ???? 1-5-0-0 ? No, 1-5-0-0-0
why? Sir you can easily go up Nandi Hills on this.
Alone ? No carrier/lover-geever along ?  (smile) no sir, alone. Married, two kids, saar.
(Vigorous head-shake) ? Exercise, saar, and no pollution
Good good! (way clear) ok sir, have to go now....

:) I think I'll meet all the people I've never met on my commute

Rgds,
Sameer

This happened to me the day before, at the Minerva junction traffic light at 8.30 PM on my way home from work.

Auto stopped next to me, passenger in the auto asked me why I was wearing a helmet. I started giving him my standard helmet lecture 43A which goes "A head is a head, whether it is on a motorbike or a bicycle, skull liable to crack if it hits a solid object at even 30 kmph., etc".
Guy on a bike beyond the auto tells the auto guy (in Kannada) "I'm sure he's not from Bangalore. Ask him which city he's from". (He abviously thinks all the nuts are from outside Bangalore)
I (in Kannada) : "Your city itself, saar."
He : "Really, and how far do you ride every day ?"
I : "Sadashivanagar to Jayanagar and back."
He : "Maan, that's terrific !"
A guy on some other bike : "Hey, you're the guy ! I saw your picture in a newspaper the other day !."
Open mouths all around, some serious respect.

Near Sadashivanagar a guy on a scooter overtakes me, gives me a thumbs up, shouts "Keep it up !" Out of the blue, never seen him in my life. He just thinks I'm doing something that's fun / environment-friendly / something he should be doing.

Incident1: A guy going in a pulsar 180cc bike stops me and asks abt why i ride, abt bike etc.

"Price?" 15k
"Why so much?" Lightweight, good brakes, long lasting components and blah blah blah (has become a pre-recorded speech now!)
asks me if he can try my bike. He rides it. Goes fida.
And he says he'll buy such a bike soon. He says it makes a lot of sense with soaring petrol prices.

Incident2: There's a guy on a splendor. We kept seeing each other at every signal. He sees me lifting my cycle off the traffic and taking it over the footpath on all the 'no-free-left-turn' junctions. And at last in one junction, he says "U r an insporation". I smile back

Incident 3: "Helmet yaake?" (Why helmet?)
Neev ikkudrunu nan taleney hogodu. (Its my head that'll smash when u hit me. [Sounds better in kannada])
"From where are u riding?" Jayanagar
"Are u crazy?" You son't need to be crazy to do this, u just need to be sensible.... (Lecture on fuel, free workout etc follows)

All this in the one week since my Merida

I am done with the first short film and it is not so gr8 - http://youtube.com/watch?v=jAdvKceU8lY used on -

http://ngopost.org/story.php?title=Organ_Donation_Make_your_death_trigger_several_new_lives_%AB_Sejrsquos_Whirlpool-1

Shud be clubbed with that one line - Anyone on bike with a helmet is an Organ donor! ;)

The idea is to make many more such films... The one on biking is a lofty project for me personally -

The one I had in mind would be much of these experiences where people are thinking of tipping and not sure how. It might have more impact that showing the one with bike taking lesser time than cars/company buses. Watever happened to the effort anyways?

Please share any such experiences - I m keeping a log of the same. Forms a good script! ;)
