I've been talking to a number of people about the club web site. A
number of goals were shared, which included the following:
* Easy to administer by just about anyone, year after year
* Needs to stay online
* Should have a way to post activities and account for sign-ups
* Should be able to post files
* Should keep a BYU look and feel.
After considering these things and talking with some of the club
leadership, I've decided to try using various Google services to
accomplish the goals. Mostly this means taking advantage of the new
Google Groups Beta, which allows for pages and files to be posted and
edited by those in the group. This is a powerful feature and I've
already moved some of our old files and pages into the system.
We are also using Google Calendar to keep track of activities and
hopefully it will work for sign-ups too. If you use any sort of
mainstream computer calendaring program, I hope you will find that you
can subscribe to the club Google Calendar so you can be updated of all
the latest activities.
We are also tinkering with the idea of using other Google services. We
could keep contact information in shared spreadsheets. We could have a
club blog. We could use Picasa Web Albums (by Google) to share photos
of club activities. We could use Google Pages to create other web page
content.
The whole thing is available by visiting the familiar address:
http://radioclub.byu.edu
The top frame uses a new web page style called Collage which should be
rolled out across BYU over the next many months.
This whole thing is rather experimental at the moment, if it is not
going to work, we can easily throw it away without too much time lost.
Eventually, I hope we can have an "elected" club webmaster who will
have the responsibility of managing these various Google services.
If you would like to discuss advantages, disadvantages, or suggestions
to this new site, please feel free to reply to this post.
Thanks and 73s,
