I unexpectedly found the following books for sale yesterday in the
"used book" section of METAPHYSICS WORLD at 2559 Broadway in Tucson,
Az. The proprietor there has a strange habit of selling brand new
paperbacks for $12 to $25, and older, much more interesting and often
very collectible hardcover books for give-away prices. When I looked
'em up on the ABE Book search engine last night, the quirky cartoon
book "FRACTURED FRENCH" (especially in the near-mint condition its in)
and "THE WORLD CRISIS" are worth $20--$30 each, and "STAY UP LATE" is
worth a minimum of $50--$60.
BREATH AWARENESS FOR PUBLIC SCHOOLS, MEDICAL PROFESSION, EVERYONE,
TRUCK DRIVERS (That's the Exact Title Page!) but: Breath Awareness for
Pubic Schools : Breath Awareness for Everyone. (is what's stated on
the Cover) by Leonard Orr. Inspiration University, Sierraville
(Ca.), 1986. Paperback. Tiny price label on back. The founder of the
"REBIRTHING" movement, referred to in glowing terms by other New
Agers, presents a rare and elusive 105-page saddle-stitched (stapled)
tract, complete with b&w photos, all about proper breathing, breathing
exercises, and breath control, evidently inspired by mystical Hindu
"Hatha Yoga" and similar practices. Leonard Orr is a big name that not
many are familiar with. After a rich and successful career which
included the discovery of REBIRTHING, he felt the call to visit India
and throw himself at the feet of various gurus and masters and by
doing so came-up with ideas like the ones in this book. RARE -- I
can't find another 1986 First Edition copy 'out there' anywhere on the
book database. $30.00.
FRACTURED FRENCH. By F.S. Pearson; R.Taylor, illustrator. Intro by
Abel Green. Doubleday, N.Y., 1950. First Edition. Pictorial boards.
Very good condition throughout. This copy shows slight shelf wear at
the corners and edges only, the interior is very good to fine
throughout. Tiny price label on back. This book is quite a curiosity,
as "french phrases" are paired with cool New Yorker-type drawings.
Inscrutable to the common man, but enormously witty and nearly-
pornographic when some of the 'translations' are seen as double-
entendres and puns. $20.00.
STAY UP LATE. By David Byrne, illustrated by Maira Kalman. Viking
Kestral, New York, 1987. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo. 7-3/4" -
9-3/4" tall. First Printing of First Edition. Fine to NEW
condition,. QUIRKY, bizarre, surreal, joyous illustrations by Maira
Kalman. Based loosely on the David Byrne / Talking Heads song on the
album "Little Creatures". Perfect, "AS NEW" condition throughout,
with an inscription on f.e.p. and one small crease (shelf wear) on the
back of the dustjacket. This is a SCARCE and desirable title. Tiny
price label on back. I wish I could describe the bizarre family views,
strange relatives, etc., indicated in these drawings! $50.00.
THE WORLD CRISIS - Its Explanation and Solution. By Walter Russell and
Lao Russell. University of Science and Philosophy, Swannanoa, 1958.
Hardcover. Very good condition throughout, in dustjacket with tiny
creases around several edges and which is slightly scuffed on the
back. Photo of the Russells on the back cover, the Lao Russell image
seemingly being taken from an idealized portrait rather than a real
photo -- it doesn't "look real". Fold-out chart, one page of which is
loose, of the "Eras" of the "Twilight Club" turning into the
"University of Science and Philosophy", also known as the Walter
Russell Foundation. Somehow, IBM is described as one of "their"
projects on this chart. Tiny price label on back.
If you'd like any of these books, "FRACTURED FRENCH" and "THE WORLD
CRISIS" are $20.00 each, "BREATH AWARENESS" is $30.00, and "STAY UP
LATE" is $50.00. These titles are POSTED FOR SALE today, June 12,
2008. They will probably still be available for sale for weeks and
possibly months to come, I'm not listing these on Amazon or ABE... so
