Taking advantage of the current downtime, we've decided to go ahead an
move into our new ISP early. I apologize profusely for the lack of
notice, but the stars all aligned today and it looks like we're gonna
move.

So - my estimates are probably a little under, but we'll probably be
down for 8-10 hours while moving. I'll be making adjustments to the
DNS, and that takes about 48 hours to fully propagate. Some people
will get it right away, but some will longer. I'll post up IP
addresses after the move.

I want to reiterate that I realize how much this sucks, but for a
little short term pain we will be better in the long run with an ISP
that has proper power distribution and backup generators and actually
responds to my calls.

Regards,
Scott

Although I'll die because of the disconnection from the matrix...I
understand the importance of the move. I wish you great success with
the move and good luck to those that survive.

May I be the first to say:

Re-assimilate me. I don't want to be an individual. I need connection
to the collective. We are Borg. No, now I are Borg. No wait, he are
Borg - the one with the battle cry. Aargh. I'm coming unraveled. I'll
never survive for 48 hours. [Sits in corner of games room with glazed
expression, dribbling and beating head with Agricola box]

Although if it's really just 8-10 hours That's ok. I can just about
fit in another game of Imperial with Crabro like yesterday's...

Just so I'm clear - once the new IP addresses are posted, we can
access directly through that IP address...it's only waiting for the
URL "boardgamegeek.com" to reconcile, that may take 48 hours, right?

Yes, thats how it works.
For instance if he posted http://192.168.1.1 then you'd copy/paste
that into your browser to access BGG.
(note that the number I just typed is NOT a valid internet address)

Well it is and it isn't. 192.168.x.x/16 is a local address block.
Such addresses are theoretically not valid on "the internet" but are
only found on an intranet. The reality is that most routers default
to 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1. Most WiFi routers I have seen use
192.168.1.1. So for many people if you click that link you see the
configuration of your WiFi box.

Right, but thats why I said it wasn't a valid "internet" address.
I didn't want to confuse anything with detailed network stuff :) I
just wanted to give an example of what an IP address might look like
to people who didn't know.
The thing is, when you give out IP numbers, it could go anywhere so I
wanted to give something that wouldn't actually go out to the
internet.
Here's an example: http://74.125.45.100/
Thats google's IP and putting that in the address bar will take people
to google. But there's no easy way for the average person to verify
thats a safe site to visit from just the IP numbers.

Speaking of routers, as a matter of fact, my router actually works
with 192.168.1.1
I also use a 3rd party firmware to add all sorts of neat features to
it. Its amazing what stuff like DD-WRT has nowadays.

The best thing would be to put a TEMPORARY line in your local hosts
file that would resolve boardgamegeek.com to the new IP address.

For Windows this file is called "hosts" and is located in %WINDIR%
\system32\drivers\etc\

(on Linux this is usually /etc/hosts, but if you're running Linux you
probably knew that already)

Edit the hosts file in Notepad or your favorite text editor. There
should be instructions and an example in the file that should make it
obvious what to do.

Just remember to remove it after a couple days...

Depends. Its likely that the site down page is from the old ISP now
that perhaps they are up from thier power outage.
If thats the case, it means the new DNS stuff hasn't yet propogated
which is actually bad news :)

On the other hand, it could be that anyone seeing that has had the DNS
stuff propagate already, so those people wouldn't need to type an IP
address to get to BGG which would be good news :)

Anything that leads to a better BGG is worth the wait.

Unfortunately, that means my trade partners from the wargame math
trade will have to wait, too. I didn't write down mailing addresses,
so now I can't send out their packages.

Exactly my thoughts. This is my first time at 'BGG down' (so I guess
now I'm officially an adict ;) and the first thing that crossed my
mind was:

"Hey, it's like dark in here, without the avatars." Some voices you
