Dear group

I am starting to look at my family history...finally.

Does anyone, now this name? João Pão Quente?

Is this a familiar name to anyone?

This man, whom I don’t know his real name, is supposed to be my great
grandfather.

He was a whale hunter, very well know, I believe he was from Saint
George. He was married, but he had a bunch of illegitimate Childs all
around the islands, and my grandfather, Felix Teixeira, was one of
them.

i woul apreciate any help.

The name makes no sense.  He must have a different (legal) surname and what you gave is the family nickname.  Pao is bread and quente is hot, so you have (in English) John Hot Bread.  That's not a surname, but could very well be a nickname.  Perhaps he was a baker on Sao Jorge before he got into whaling?  Maybe he picked up a piece of hot bread and said "ouch ouch ouch" as he bounced it around and the nickname stuck.  Who knows.

Hello Cheri,

I Know! The name is just simply strange.

I never thought that he could be a baker, before whaling!

That's a great idea!

Tanks!

I don't know his real name because in the records my grandfather was baptized with parents " Desconhecidos" and he was raised by a couple in Rosais, that adopted him, but there is no record of this ( this is what my father remembers, is dad died, when he was 8 years old) But my dad remembers visiting his grandfather. And this man had a Lot of Kids!!!!!! I mean a lot…like 20 or more spread around the islands.

I guess that the only way by finding his real name is to talk to an old whaler that wrote, also, about this João pão quente, in His Book, Memoirs of a whaler. And yes, in the book...he does not mention his real name, just joão pão quente

By the way, the book is wonderful. Do you know it? Is was written by Nuno Alvaro Mendonça, from saint George.
