Hi,

I have recently received a birth certificate for an ancestor which
shows his father (John Augustus NESBITT) was born in Sao Migel,
Azores. I had been struggling for some time trying to find him in St
Michaels, England as that was on John's own death certificate!

I've since found IGIs for two brothers born in Sao Miguel - George b
1830 and Charles b 1832, but no record of John.

Their parents were George NESBITT and Elisabeth HUGHAM.

Given that they must have been in the Azores for at least 3 years they
must have left some trace there. I am assuming that they were involved
in shipping or oranges - or both.

Does any of this sound familiar to members of the group? Otherwise can
I please have some advice on how to research this?

Of course, since I had a look on the net to see what the Azores look
like I have no objection in the least to trekking off there, but
that's not going to happen anytime soon. What an extraordinary place -
Sao Miguel looks like a bit of Ireland fell off and sailed south.

Cheers

From this Nesbitt family of English origin, there was living on Ponta Delgada in 1806 a João Nesbitt, a physician who obtained his degree from the University of Aberdeen (See Arquivo dos Açores, Vol.º XI pp. 345 e 351). In the parish of Matriz de Ponta Delgada where she was born , Isabel Augusta Nesbitt, daughter of Jorge Nesbitt and Maria Wilisson, married Jorge Augusto Nesbitt, son of João Nesbitt and Isabel Nesbitt (See Dr. Francisco de Ataíde M. de Faria e Maia, Capitães Generais, pp.131 and those following).

Jorge Augusto Nesbitt and his wife Isabel Augusta Nesbitt, had the following children:

1.Maria, born in S. Pedro de Ponta Delgada on 4.7.1825 and baptized there on 14 Aug.
2. Carlos Nesbitt, born on 18.10.1832.
3. Eduardo Nesbit, born in S. Pedro de P. Delgada where he was married, age 29, on 23.4.1862 to Maria José Moreira da Câmara.

Isabel Augusta, native of Matriz de Ponta Delgada is the daughter of Jorge Urion and Maria Urion. (See also Arquivo dos Açores, Vol. X págs. 409 relative to these Nesbitts). All of this is from Rodrigo Rodrigues Genealogias de S. Miguel e Santa Maria.

Thank you, thank you, thank you! Given the Anglicisation of the names
- this sounds a probable match.

It gives me a lot to go on but as I won't have access to the sources
you mention here in Australia I will start googling immediately. Or, I
might just have to visit Sao Miguel :-)

Cheers

Visiting S. Miguel is the way to go. I think you can access Arquivo dos Açores on the internet. I'm glad I could help.

Hello again John,

Is Elizabeth a likely anglicisation of Isabel?

Cheers
