The spam filter won't let Charlene post this, so I'll try it for her.

======================
I have not posted for quite a while, but am still slowly working at family history. I am hoping that someone will be familiar with the document type that is attached. Is it an immigration document? If so, does anyone know what the headings for the information written in on the right side is? Also, on the left it says Freguesia and I believe it says Feteria, but not sure. Then on the right it says (I am guessing) Freguesia again, but the word looks like it begins with an "R". Anyone see that?

Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you-

Charlene

It is Feteira, in Terceira Island. As the document was issued in 1912 (on the right) it means that he was born in Ribeirinha.

This document is a good example of something that happens in the church records: "someone is native of" does not mean that that person was baptized in that village. In this case Antonio Cardoso Pires is native of Feteira but was baptized in Ribeirinha.

Feteira became an independent village in 1907 from Ribeirinha and Porto Judeu.

The Exercito Portugal is the Portuguese Army. This is a rail pass for soldiers. In this case for a reservist to travel for free to his training. On the right side it does say a natural of the freguisia of  Feteira in the concelho de Angra do Heroismo.

On the left side it's probably where the Antonio Cardoso Pires lives, I make it to be Riberinha, also in the concelho of Angra do Heroismo. At the far right is a Physical description of him with descriptions of eyes, nose, mouth, hair, beard. I can't make out the script there.

At the bottom right, it asks what occupation prior to military service, Can't make that out.

Dear cheri

Sory for my english

So here goes, what i make of it.

This document is from the portuguese army.

Its a safe pass that the soldiers could use to get aboard the rail road train witauht paying the tiket. This is very usual, if the person was on leave, or was drafetd by the firts time, or just called. The army provided this "pass" for the soldiers to move from a to b.

it is not a passport, because, to travel inland, from the islands, to mainland, for instances, you would still be in portuguese territory.

Since there is no rail road train in azores, so he has to be in the mainland, Portugal.

But the part that is supossed to be filled to were he is going ( from A to b) and sould also have a stamp from the rail road master, is empty. Maybe, he did not use it. Maybe he went by other means.

So it says that Antonio Cardoso Pires, son of João cardoso Pires, from Feteira, ( its a Freguesia, of Terceira, http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feteira_(Angra_do_Hero%C3%ADsmo) Freguesia is a municipal division of a city, in this case, of Angra, In the island Terceira.

From what i can read of the document, he was drafet to the army at 12 of July of 1912. Its a troubled time, because its teh birth of the portuguese republic, and also, its close to worl war 1, were portuguese troops were sent. And usually they would stay in the army for a very long time-

I cant read, for how long, he is going to be in the army, but i can see the number 5, and i cant read where he is going to be.

What i can read, its a kind of short physical descrition of the person. He has brown hair, no beard or moustache, and as regular features, and an oval face.

If you can improve the quality of the image, adjust the color contrast, etc, maybe i could read all the other pieces of information.

I hope i gave some help.

Thank you, Cheri, Eric, Yolanda and Joao. The information that you
gave was very helpful. I will try to make adjustment in the image,
Yolanda and see if it becomes clearer.

I am wondering if this Antonio Cardoso Pires was a cousin of my
grandfather, Joao Cardoso Pires. He had a brother, also an Antonio
Cardoso Pires. They all three settled finally in the same area of
California.

Thank you all very much, I really appreciate the assistance and will
make note of your responses.
