I am Charlotte White and live in Hawaii. I have much information on my mother’s family roots. Her grandparents were Jose Tavares Teves born on June 1, 1854 in Rabo de Peixe and her maternal grandmother was Rosa Augusta Ventura also from Rabo de Peixe. We can trace both of these families back to the 1600-1700 hundreds.

However, I have very little information on my mother’s fathers family. He was Joseph Tavares Ferreira and was  born on Feb. 22 1879 in Riberia Grande and was the son of Jose Tavares Ferreira born in 1843 and Maria Augusta Pimental born about 1848. He arrived in Hawaii on Aug. 24, 1881. I would be very grateful if anyone has any info. on this side of the family. Aloha

Charlotte,

You might also try IslandRoutes - www.islandroutes.com.  She has a list like this one too, but its focus is mostly the Azorean-Hawaiian immigration.  You can reach the webmaster, Mel, at islandroutes at islandroutes dot com.

Hello Charlotte,

Are you referring to Ribeira Grande in Sao Miguel? I have the films for both NS Estrela and Santissimo Salvador at my local FHC and have accumulated much information on the marriages in both Parishes. You have the parents of Jose Tavares Ferreira and his birth date does that mean you have his Baptismal record from Ribeira Grande (I assume NS Estrela) that would give the grand parents of Jose Tavares Ferreira and Maria Augusta Pimentel.

A quick look in my files and I find a Maria  daughter of Jose Pimentel born 8 Apr 1848 in Ribeirinha.

There is a good chance we may have a connection.

I have no other information except that Jose was born on Feb 22, 1879 and had a sister Maria born in 1878 and and brother Joao born ?They came to Hawaii on the ship Suffolk and arrived here on Aug. 24, 1881 so my grandfather was only two years old. He was naturalized in 1900. I have no baptismal records. I would appreciate any info you have.  We know we have some family in New England on my grandmother’s side but have no idea of any other family. It is so sad to think that once they came to Hawaii the link to the Azores and any family was lost. Aloha, charlotte

Hello Charlotte,

I have the film from NS Estrela (Ribeira Grande) that covers the marriage time period but not the one for the birth of Jose. I will take a look and see if I can find the marriage. I looked at the marriages in Santisssimo Salvador (Ribeirinha) and it is not there. If I can find it, the record will provide much information. I am not sure when I can make it to the FHC and take a look as I have to work today. I will get back to you.

In the Ribeira Grande area during the time period there were three or four Pimentel families one of the three came from Achada and is the one I descend from. The others had lived in the Ribeira Grande area for a good many years.

Rick and Charlotte,

I’m wondering if these are the Pimentals that are married to my side as well as the Tavares being from Ribeira Grande for so many years?  In fact, my cousin, Jose Tavares still lives there and owns the restaurant, Balloa. He may list his name now as Jose Borges Tavares. One female Borges did marry a Pimental who still resides there as well. One Pimental was Chief of Police and I think his son maybe a Judge or was a Judge.

That Tavares came down from Joao de Fontes Tavares, but not from Ribeira Grande. I’m related on the Borges side. I did find out though that I have Jose Tavares Torrado Rodrigues Ferreira b. abt. 1740’s m. *Mariana Francisca Borges 1767 so that Borges side does have Tavares as well but dropped the Tavares in the 1800’s which brought down my gggrandfather Francisco Borges Giesta b. abt. 1812. My ggrandfather Manuel Borges Giesta was born abt. 1856 m. 1879 in Ribeira Grande.

Manuel Rodrigues b. abt. 1688 m. Maria Francisca; child- Nicolao Franisco Rodrigues

Manuel Borges m. Antonia Tavares; children Teresa Borges m. Nicolao and Bernarda Borges m. Manuel Vieira from Sao Pedro, Ribeira Seca.

Teresa and Nicolao’s child is *Mariana Francisca Borges

This is all on my mother’s paternal side. My mother had dropped Giesta so that’s why I have Borges in my legal name and Furtado as my maiden.

I have on my father’s maternal side; Manuel Rodrigues b. abt. 1715 m. Barbara Tavares; children-Antonio de Sousa Tavares m. Vitoria do Sacramento Rego Carvalho in 1766 in Ribeira Grande. They were brought down by female; my ggrandparents with the de Sousa name who married a de Sousa so my Grandmother was Maria de Resurreicao de Sousa m. Antonio Morgado Furtado. I don’t know why Rodrigues was dropped and didn’t have any more info on Tavares.

Most from Ribeira Grande, NS da Conceicao some from NS da Estrella.

I hope this helps Charlotte, too.

Unfortunately when I was in S. Miguel last year the Balão restaurante, which was always one of my favorites, had gone out of business. I know because I made a special trip to Ribeira Grande just so I could have lunch there. Instead we had lunch at the à la bôte right on the ocean. The bacalhau they served was to die for. Still, I remember O Balão with saudade.

I so appreciate the effort you are taking.  I found in some boxes from my mom (She passed away almost two years ago. She was 96. There is much longevity in her family. Most lived until late 90’s. Infact she has one sister that made 100 on Sept. 5th. So if we are related, this would be a good gene to have.) a picture of Maria Augusta as an elderly lady. My mom often said that she spoke no English but loved to drink tea and it was my mom’s job as a little girl to keep the teapot full for her “avu” ?

Avu is avô which is grandmother.  Avó is grandfather.  Vovô is another form for grandma and Vovó is another form for grandpa.

Cheri, here is are the terms used to define grandfather and grandmother: Avu doesn’t exist. The right word would be Avô or Vovô for grandfather, and Avó ou Vovó for grandmother. Apart from the four mentioned there are others less popular, but used in certain regions of Portugal.

Carlos Lopes

I do mix up the accents on those words (grandma/grandpa) because they are so similar to me (non-native speaker).

Charlotte,

The Azores government maintains a website with online documents,
including passports out of the Azores, birth, death, and marriage
records. You will see it referred to as the CCA or Centro de
Conhecimento dos Acores. here is the link.

http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/ig/

In the passportes section, in Ponta Delgada, for years 1875-1883 on
page # 0066 on line 365, I found

Jose Tavares Ferreira on the right side it shows Maria Augusta. It
looks like him.

here is the link to that page:

http://pg.azores.gov.pt/drac/cca/biblioteca_digital/PPDL1875-1883/PPDL1875-1883_item1/P67.html

Let me know if it doesn't come up.

Eric, thank you so much. It was so exciting to see his name in print. Would
you know if there is a way to search out his marriage cert or birth cert for
my grandfather who was born on Feb.22 1879? This might give me more names.
Aloha and again mahalo for your help.

Though my Luiz Ferreira b. abt. 1700 was from Ribeira Grande m. to Maria ? de Mederios. They brought down Luiza de Medeiros m. Manuel do Santos Faria. Their child was Monica Jacinta de Jesus who married Joao Borge Tavares. Joao was the grandchild of Joao Rodrigues Ferreira and Maria dos Santos.  The male dropped the Tavares in the early 1800’s? I can understand the female dropping Ferreira since they kept their mothers name instead as you can see by Ferreira is no longer added as well. They are coming from NS da Conceicao, but others are from NS da Estrella as well.

Can there be a connection by siblings?

Linda
