Good Morning All,

I've been giving things a lot of thought. And while I've been an
atheist all of my life, I've found that being on this news group has
been an enlightening and educational experience on religion.

In the past, my explorations on religion have been to talk to the
religious face to face to read the doctrines. As a cynical and
rebellious teenager I found little to hold my attention or interest.

Now, that I'm a mature adult, and have had the opportunity to debate
with the many great religious minds on this site, in particular, Joe,
Brock, Peter W, Deidzoeb, Mike, theultimatetruth, and others, and
while I have done my best and made every effort to refute their
scintillating arguments, I find myself at a loss for words, and
emptiness deep in my heart and soul.

The truth is, that I have no arguments. Guys, you have convinced me.
God exists.

I've decided to make my announcement public that I've converted. Your
arguments were just too strong in the face of mine and other atheists
on this site.

Atheists.

The argument that I found most compelling and difficult to refute was
the following:
TRANSCENDENTAL ARGUMENT, a.k.a. PRESUPPOSITIONALIST (I)
(1) If reason exists then God exists.
(2) Reason exists.
(3) Therefore, God exists.

Now really, come on. How is this refutable?

Open your eyes, people!

Open your hearts and minds to God.

To my buddies:
I know that you're going to truly disappointed that I've switched
sides, but I just found their arguments too compelling, and you guys
are just Such meanies that, well, you know....

You need to learn some manners. Politeness lends credibility to
argument, don't you get that?

Really, think about it.

Theist Trance.

Thank you Random.

Politeness lends credibility to argument.

I see that You understand that concept, unlike some others...

There is a soul because:

TRANSCENDENTAL ARGUMENT, a.k.a. PRESUPPOSITIONALIST (I)
(1) If reason exists then the Soul exists.
(2) Reason exists.
(3) Therefore, the Soul exists.

Now, the fact is that the Human Being has three components. Physical,
Spiritual, and Soul.

The Soul is that which makes you ... You! Get it? It's sooooo obvious.
Plain as the nose on your face!!!!!!!!

Hah. Now refute that one, buddy.

Oh, excuse me, that was a little rude. My apologies.

Please present a logical and substantiated argument to refute this.

You did a good work when you combined your proof with a nice amount of
exclamation points, but this is still not persuasive enough.
Probably because you forgot the caps lock.

Politeness lends credibility to argument.

Patience is a virtue.

I have my wings. Now that I've converted, Lawrey, I'm perfect in God's
eyes.

Those who cannot see are blind. Profound isn't it?

We only have one Soul, silly :-).

TRANSCENDENTAL ARGUMENT, a.k.a. PRESUPPOSITIONALIST (I)
(1) If reason exists then the Soul exists.
(2) Reason exists.
(3) Therefore, the Soul exists.

Now, the fact is that the Human Being has three components. Physical,

obvious.
Plain as the nose on your face!!!!!!!!

Now is this a totally brilliant argument or not? Seriously.

I had not heard this argument before. I think now there is no choice
but to be a theist. Furthermore, I choose to worship the very
specific
Judeo-Christian god, as I live in a Christian nation, and I want to be
in
the majority.

All you other atheists need to reconsider the evidence. Or, you can
burn in hell for eternity. It's your choice.

God bless.

Now just to elaborate a little bit on my full argument:

TRANSCENDENTAL ARGUMENT, a.k.a. PRESUPPOSITIONALIST (I)
(1) If reason exists then God exists.
(2) Reason exists.
(3) Therefore, God exists.

God made Man in His Image.

(1) If God exists, then the Spirit exists.
(2) God exists.
(3) Therefore, the Spirit exists.

(1) If God exists then the Soul exists.
(2) God exists.
(3) Therefore, the Soul exists.

God made Woman from Rib of Man.

(1) If God exists, then he made Man.
(2) God exists.
(3) Therefore, Man exists.

(1) If Man exists, then God made Woman from Man's Rib
(2) Man exists.
(3) Therefore, Woman exists.

Since God made Woman from Man's Rib
Then Woman exists for Man ;-)

Man serves God
Woman serves Man

Tell me you guys don't love that!

My name is Dita
I'll be your mistress tonight
I'd like to put you in a trance

If I take you from behind
Push myself into your mind
When you least expect it
Will you try and reject it
If I'm in charge and I treat you like a child
Will you let yourself go wild
Let my mouth go where it wants to

Once you put your hand in the flame
You can never be the same
There's a certain satisfaction
In a little bit of pain
I can see you understand
I can tell that you're the same
If you're afraid, well rise above
I only hurt the ones I love

I don't think you know what pain is
I don't think you've gone that way
I could bring you so much pleasure
I'll come to you when you say
I know you want me
I'm not gonna hurt you
I'm not gonna hurt you, just close your eyes

Only the one that hurts you can make you feel better
Only the one that inflicts pain can take it away

Punish me
punish me

and gold turns to stone
your size makes me small
you can be my punisher (yeah)

Punish me

include me in your prayer
before the wind blows even colder
Your size makes me small
you can be my punisher
you can be my punisher

Your size makes me small

He sewed his eyes shut because he is afraid to see
He tries to tell me what I put inside of me
He's got the answers to ease my curiosity
He dreamed a god up and called it Christianity
Your God is dead and no one cares
If there is a Hell I will see you there

He flexed his muscles to keep his flock of sheep in line
He made a virus that would kill off all the swine
His perfect kingdom of killing, suffering and pain
Demands devotion atrocities done in his name
Your God is dead and no one cares
Drowning in his own hypocrisy
If there is a Hell I will see you there
Burning with your god in humility

Will you die for this?

My favorites are

ARGUMENT FROM BIOGENESIS
(1) Where did Adam come from, dummy?
(2) Therefore, God exists.

ARGUMENT FROM ARGUMENTATION
(1) God exists.
(2) [Atheist's counterargument]
(3) Yes he does.
(4) [Atheist's counterargument]
(5) Yes he does!
(6) [Atheist's counterargument]
(7) YES HE DOES!!!
(8) [Atheist gives up and goes home.]
(9) Therefore, God exists.

ARGUMENT FROM EXHAUSTION (abridged)
(1) Do you agree with the utterly trivial proposition X?
(2) Atheist: of course.
(3) How about the slightly modified proposition X'?
(4) Atheist: Um, no, not really.
(5) Good. Since we agree, how about Y? Is that true?
(6) Atheist: No! And I didn't agree with X'!
(7) With the truths of these clearly established, surely you agree
that Z is true as well?
(8) Atheist: No. So far I have only agreed with X! Where is this
going, anyway?
(9) I'm glad we all agree.....
....
(37) So now we have used propositions X, X', Y, Y', Z, Z', P, P', Q
and Q' to arrive at the obviously valid point R. Agreed?
(38) Atheist: Like I said, so far I've only agreed with X. Where is
this going?
....
(81) So we now conclude from this that propositions L'', L''' and J''
are true. Agreed?
(82) I HAVEN'T AGREED WITH ANYTHING YOU'VE SAID SINCE X! WHERE IS
THIS GOING?
....
(177) ...and it follows that proposition HRV, SHQ'' and BTU' are all
obviously valid. Agreed?
(178) [Atheist either faints from overwork or leaves in disgust.]
(179) Therefore, God exists.

And why not? After all, there is nothing immoral about supporting and
perpetuating theism--this, too, has dawned on me on this first of
April. Just because you support something with visible consequences
with full knowledge that these consequences occur in no way connects
the consequences to you. Since history cannot be repeated with all
variables intact except for one, it is stupid to learn from it. There
is no evidence that anything caused anything in history, so it's
reasonable to assert that religion never caused any damage at all.
Besides, Christians say they aren't murderers and murderers _never_
say they aren't murderers. Also, something that has had negative
consequences that is completely necessary and does more good than harm
is exactly the same as something that is completely unnecessary and
does more harm than good. It is all so obvious.

It is with great sorrow that I hereby declare you as lost to the
deluded...

Since you personally claim to be a christian, I have no choise but to
believe you...

Now, for the theist probation time:

Should you behave in a non-jesus-like manner, you will be punished
with a 30 minutes conversion to atheism.

For each subsequent non-jesus-like behaviour, the sentence will be
increased by 30 minutes.

After 5 non-jesus-like behaviours, you will be regarded as a fullblown
atheist for 72 hours before you again will be allowed to call yourself
a christian.

Good luck and may the Schwarz be with you! I will miss you deeply :(

You forgot this part :-)

Revelation 3:14-19.
14 "To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words
of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God's
creation.
15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you
were either one or the other!
16 So, because you are lukewarm--neither hot nor cold--I am about to
spit you out of my mouth.
17 You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a
thing.' But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor,
blind and naked.
18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can
become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful
nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.
19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest, and
repent.

3:20, IMHO, is applicable to many situations, not just to the lukewarm
state of the Laodicean church.

and listen to it LOUD.....

True story -
A former neighbor of mine was quite inept with regards to home electronics. He asked me to make a cassette tape for him (this was about ten yearws ago) as he and his wife were taken a long weekend on marthas vinyard and she wanted to listen to some tunes while she was sunning herself on the beach. She gave me a james taylor cd and a carly simon cd (really...I'm _not_ making this up). So I record the cds, and on side 2 there were about 5 mintues left on the tape. Now mind you, I had only moved into the neighborhodd afew months earlier, and didn't really know the couple very well. Well, as many of you have no doubt been able to ascertain by this point, I'm somewhat of a free spirit. I though it would be fun to put something special on the end of the tape for her. At first I though of Sex by Berlin, but then thought nah, too poppy. Then I thought 'I don't believe' by stabbing westward. nah, too harsh for a tape with carly and james. I settled on Closer by NIN.

You let me violate you, you let me desecrate you
You let me penetrate you, you let me complicate you
Help me I broke apart my insides, help me I’ve got no soul to sell
Help me the only thing that works for me, help me get away from myself

I want to fuck you like an animal
I want to feel you from the inside
I want to fuck you like an animal
My whole existence is flawed
You get me closer to God

You can have my isolation, you can have the hate that it brings
You can have my absence of faith, you can have my everything
Help me tear down my reason, help me it’s your sex I can smell
Help me you make me perfect, help me become somebody else

I want to fuck you like an animal
I want to feel you from the inside
I want to fuck you like an animal
My whole existence is flawed
You get me closer to God

Through every forest, above the trees
Within my stomach, scraped off my knees
I drink the honey inside your hive
You are the reason I stay alive

I didn't see them for a couple weeks. conflicting schedules. I was over their house on a susequent weekend and asked how the tape turned out. He said "oh yeah. what was that fucked up song at the end? [my wife] was listening to it, and gave it to me and said 'this doesn't sound like james taylor"

I wouldn't call it that, though he did make a habit of inviting me over for
drinks after that, and I caught his wife looking at me kind of sideways with
a mischievous smirk on more than one occasion.

Well you know we could have some fun with that ;-).

What do you think?

This is AvC I mean we can't leave the Christians out can we?

Sorry. I'm a bit dense in that regard ;-). It's taken me a few months
to actually get it. Lol.

I expect many of us here have stories about 'closer.' I have (all
related to a guy called Cameron Jon Neil and his next door neighbour,
Cyd - "don't throw matches on the roof of my carport" (because I'm too
damn busy spraying the ants off my Runcorn Telecom fuckin' concrete
driveway). You know who the fuck you are Cyd (or was it 'Cess"?).

Oh, to the contrary, He and I spent many weekends into the wee hours
drinking gin and tonics and sneaking a quick toke in the back yard. His wife
loved to lay out by the pool in a bikini, was exceptionally Italian and thus
tanned beautifully, and had the figure that did swimsuits justice. They did
the church thing on easter with their extended family, I think that was it.
Religiosity was never part of our conversations though tales of past
debauchery were common.

Excellent! That sure was no James Taylor!

I remember, back when MTV actually played music, they played the great
video for that song with the "fuck" changed to "fAAHk.

That's the beautiful part of the Bible. It's vague enough that you
can apply
it to any situation and any point of view. What a blessed book! It
says
everything and nothing all at once. How useful.

If we were to be consistant with interpretating Trance's post here,
this will be two responses:

Atheist: He clearly has converted. Look at the proof, he even says
that he converted by taking the time to actually write this testimony.

Christian: I cannot tangibly prove that he is joking, but he has not
converted, and it is obvious.

Prove I didn't convert, Semi ;-)

Sorry Chris I missed this.

This passage says it best: Revelations 3:19.

19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline.

I don't consider this love.

Anybody know the kids' book, "If you give a moose a muffin" ?
It's one phrase per page, with humorous pictures of the moose
following you into the house to ask for a glass of milk to go with it,
staying to cut out paper dolls and try on your sweater, etc. etc.

Maybe time for a sequel, "If you give Jesus a jelly sandwich" or "If
you give the Christ a carrot".
