The Russians invaded Afghanistan to break the stranglehold the
religious extremist had over the general population. They built
schools, roads, hospitals, and provided jobs for the Afghans, all was
good. Then the Russians allowed women to dress shamelessly, attend
school!, and work outside the home. This was more than the Muslim
people of faith could bear. They fought back. Our people of faith who
hated the Russians as part of their Christian dogma, without finding
out all of facts aided the Muslim people of faith, who drove out the
hated Russians.
Now we have invaded Afghanistan and are trying to drive out the same
religious extremist that have the same stranglehold on the Afghan
people that the Russians were trying to drive out. We are known as
the
Great Satan in the Muslim world and aid to the Muslim people of faith
is pouring in.
Why didn't we just let the Russians do the right thing?

Ummm... we (the West) did let the Russians "do the right thing". About
the only NATO act in response to Soviet aggression was to boycott the
Olympics of 1980, and ship in a few Stinger missiles. It was the
mujahadeen who kicked out the foreign invader, and they've been waging
wars against imperial powers for much longer than they've been Muslim;
the Macedonians, Romans, Byzantines, Parthians, Persians, Chinese,
Mongols and the British all came to grief here before the Soviets.

You do realize that the U.S. secretly (not so secretly anymore, nor
potentially even then) funded and gave arms to the resistance in
Afghanistan which led to the rise of Osama Bin Laden?

Yes I realise, but apart from the Stingers I mentioned US aid wasn't
much help. The Afghan fighters preferred the more robust AK47 to the
tupperware Armalite rifles, and most of the funds were embezzled by
middlemen from hapless CIA providers.

Ahmad Shah DURRANI unified the Pashtun tribes and founded Afghanistan
in 1747. The country served as a buffer between the British and
Russian empires until it won independence from notional British
control in 1919. A brief experiment in democracy ended in a 1973 coup
and a 1978 Communist counter-coup. The Soviet Union invaded in 1979 to
support the tottering Afghan Communist regime, touching off a long and
destructive war. The USSR withdrew in 1989 under relentless pressure
by internationally supported anti-Communist mujahedin rebels. A series
of subsequent civil wars saw Kabul finally fall in 1996 to the
Taliban, a hardline Pakistani-sponsored movement that emerged in 1994
to end the country's civil war and anarchy. Following the 11 September
2001 terrorist attacks in New York City, a US, Allied, and anti-
Taliban Northern Alliance military action toppled the Taliban for
sheltering Osama BIN LADIN. The UN-sponsored Bonn Conference in 2001
established a process for political reconstruction that included the
adoption of a new constitution, a presidential election in 2004, and
National Assembly elections in 2005. In December 2004, Hamid KARZAI
became the first democratically elected president of Afghanistan and
the National Assembly was inaugurated the following December. Despite
gains toward building a stable central government, a resurgent Taliban
and continuing provincial instability - particularly in the south and
the east - remain serious challenges for the Afghan Government.

it was really just a joke. But what benefit would there have been to a
communist incursion into any part of the world? Remember Hitler made
the trains run on time. Can we agree that communism has been, hands
down, the greatest destructive evil force we've ever seen? Never mind
the "isms" line. Islam, which arguably has the potential to be an
extremely destructive force, has never committed itself to exterminate
humankind the way communsist regimes have.

I talked to a Viet Nam vet, and he referred to the M16 as a pos.
Granted the AK-47s are more robust, but they're hardly accurate. Not
designed to be I guess.

We did not aim. One does not lift ones head in a heavy fire fight.
There is a handle on the M-16 for a reason. Spray and pray. Besides in
the jungle see your enemy so good accuracy is not essential. We were
told if we put more rounds down range than our opponent we would be
declared the WINNER. Third party M-16 make excellent long range
varmint weapons, .223 rounds are getting scarce. Damn you Afghanistan
and Iraq.

Then what is it? And let's see how your twisted conclusion jives w/
150,000,000 dead souls in the 20th century alone.

A large portion of humankind...Bob. An exceedingly large portion.
There is a entire movie about the AK47 called IIRC lords of war with
Nicolas Cage. A little preachy but a good movie.
It is a phenomenal weapon, for putting a lot of rounds down range.
Every gun show I go to
has a ton of them and very few AR 15's the civilian version of the
M-16 and much more expensive
than the AK 47. If I was going to go varmint hunting I would take the
M-16, shoot deer AK 47, killing
as many people as possible as cheaply as possible AK 47 again.

well it remains to be seen what the person meant by denigrating the
M16. You said no one aims in combat. So what's the benefit of an M16
in combat then?
do you experience anything in the way of compassion for the animals
you kill?

If you're going to quote a famous historical figure, you look stupid
if you name the wrong one.

A hundred and fifty million? How do you get that figure? In any
case, your statement was far too broad and sweeping to be anything but
propaganda.

Oh, nonsense. There is a big difference between starting wars and
following idiotic economic policies that starved millions and
"committing itself to exterminating mankind."
Here's an analogy: whenever creationists discuss evolution they sound
like idiots. This does not mean that they "commit themselves to
idiocy."

Well Bob I have only to date heard how Hitler made the trains run on
time. Even remember Allan Keys saying it once during a debate or
something. Don't think I ever even heard about Mussolini in that way.

Figures a commie would state that.

That's not what I meant. It was a slight error on my part. Get over
it.

This reveals that you don't know much about 20th Century history. Or
how to spell Alan Keyes' name. Or the fact that nobody should believe
anything that Keyes says because the man is an ultra-right-wing
nutcase.

I've been trying not to just call you a moron over and over, Chris,
but you make it tough on me.

It's hard whether you say these stupid things on purpose or by
accident.

If you don't believe that the theory of evolution is the only
reasonable explanation for the history and diversity of life on Earth,
you are indeed an idiot.

No? Why would I? Varmints are varmints, Deer are large rats.

So explain to me why humans are entitled to compassion then. Why
isn't a person just a "grown rat"?
