reading through the responses to observers "A Gentle inquisition
please tell us why ?" i noticed that the north american posters seem
the most reluctant to openly state that they are atheists.

Ive been openly atheist in the uk for years and the worst its got me
is dealing with barroom drunks demanding i explain "how ALL THIS
happened then?". The tactic ive developed is to say i will answer
their questions if they answer mine. I often have to explain exactly
what Deism or Pantheism is after one of these exchanges. And this in a
land of Established Religion.

so to the athiest :-

Whats the worst thats happened to you at the hands of theists?

ok chx, you can join in with all the stuff nasty atheists have done to
your favourate teddy.

but i must add, 2 sides to a goin. it was christians that 'sponsored'

I have been assaulted, had my car vandalized (more than once), and
been verbally accosted more times than I can remember.
Out of all of those I'd have to say the vandalization of my car was
the worse. The assault wasn't really much. I was told by some high and
mighty theist that... "the only good atheist is a dead one." To which
I replied, "fuck off". Then he punched me. Luckily for me, he hit like
a school girl, unfortunately for him, I don't.
My car on the other hand used to sport a Darwin fish on the back. I
had my paint scratched up, a window  busted and my Darwin fish
destroyed. that was the first time. The second time I had my car spray
painted with religious themed graffiti. Insurance only covered the
window. The cops told me there was nothing they could do and told me
it was basically my own fault for having an offensive decal on my car.
The Darwin fish is gone, but I replaced it with a rocket fish that
says science in it. So far, no problems yet with that one.

shit!

i have been thinking of a darwin fish for some time but i drive the
a406 in london every morning and evening. As this is the most
congested and mental road in the capital i purposely limit any signage
that will give others any reason to cut me up or be arseholes, i dont
even have a welsh flag or bumper sticker.

are you from a small town or are your experiences typical?

dead kennedy,

I have been forcefully removed on two seperate occasions for
interupting talks by religiously sponsored meetings that purport
to know that a superhuman being created the universe, by
insisting they answer awkward questions,( well awkward for them).
I was accused of disruptive behaviour likely to cause a fracass.

I'm Canadian, I've received no real grief telling people I'm an
atheist. I think being an atheist is mostly a social stigma in the US.

Dk, Im from a small city in NY. My experiences aren't really typical
and those events happened well over a decade long period. The fight
was way back in the early 90's and it's the only time I've actually
had someone take a swing at me for being an atheist. I don't take any
shit from anyone, and  Although I have been threatened with violence
on a few other occasions, they just didn't have the balls to back it
up. The car incidents happened a few years ago and were almost a year
apart. I was living about a block down the street from the local
catholic school. The neighborhood used to be predominetly Irish and a
few Italian catholics back in the day. Nowadays there's more student &
low income housing in the neighborhood, so the LDS Morons and the
Jahovah's Idiots have been knocking on doors at least once a week for
as long as I can remember. I actually attended that catholic school
for a few years as a kid. That experience helped move me from an
agnostic/deist position closer to an agnostic/atheist. I took several
more years and few Carl Sagan books before I truly became an atheist.

So much for freedom of speech...

I used to live in a fancy suburb of a large, American city, then I
lived sans car in that city, now I live in a rural area.  In none of
those places would I risk the safety of myself or my car with a bumper
sticker that some jerk would find objectionable.

I didn't even put a political bumper sticker on during our recent
Presidential election.  People get nuts over this stuff.

DK,

Please don't get me wrong, I appreciate my freedom to say
what I have a mind to say over here in the UK and I have even been
invited to express my views to christian groups, so I am not
complaining and yes DK I guess you are right, in that sense I don't
think I would go down well in the USA. I would probably be as dead
as the Dodo by now, since I find it difficult to keep a still tongue
when I comes to religion.
