Statement No. 59 of The Association of Victims of the American Occupation Prisons (NGO)
In the poor popular district of Abou-Deshir where the simple people lives, some of the agents of the "Maghawir " Police, of The Ministry of Interior, have committed a terrible crime, which could be added to the crimes of sectarian militias working under covered as Security Forces and under full American protection. Al-Qaeda in Lebanon: More Neocon Hooey
Kurt Nimmo, Another Day in the Empire
Not only is the omnipresent "al-Qaeda" at work in Gaza (see previous post) but if we are to believe Reuters and the New York Times, the custom-made (by the CIA and Pakistan’s ISI) terrorist outfit is also busy at work in Lebanon, firing missile salvos into northern Israel. "The lion sons of al Qaeda launched … a new attack on the Jewish state by launching 10 missiles … from the Muslims’ lands in Lebanon on selected targets in the north of the Jewish state," a "statement" on a supposed "al-Qaeda" website claims. "The statement could not be authenticated, but was posted on a main Web site frequently used by Iraqi insurgent groups. It did not give the date of the attack," Reuters adds. No explanation here why U.S. military intelligence has not attacked or taken down a website run by "Iraqi insurgent groups," unless of course this particular website is a Pentagon black op...

Iraqi Resistance Report for events of Monday, 2 January 2006
Translated and/or compiled by Muhammad Abu Nasr, member, editorial board, the Free Arab Voice. ( http://www.freearabvoice.org )
In a dispatch posted at 11:50am Mecca time Monday morning, Mafkarat al-Islam reported that Iraqi Resistance fighters had mounted a fierce attack on the joint US-Iraqi puppet regime headquarters in the middle of ar-Ramadi, some 110km west of Baghdad. The ar-Ramadi correspondent for Mafkarat al-Islam reported eyewitnesses as saying that the Resistance began the battle when they bombarded the camp with mortar rounds and then with medium-range S5K rockets, destroying large sections of the facility...

Out of Iraq Events Planned Nationwide on January 7th
David Swanson
Local organizations have planned over 70 Out of Iraq events around the country on or about January 7th. (See list at bottom.) Most of the events are town hall forums, and several will feature members of Congress, including Bobby Scott, Diane Watson, Jim McDermott, Adam Smith, Bob Filner, Martin Sabo, Jim Moran, and John Murtha. Several other events will feature congressional staff, congressional and senatorial candidates, local elected officials, and leaders of the peace movement, including Gold Star Families for Peace founder Cindy Sheehan, and After Downing Street Co-Founder John Bonifaz. While all of these events will focus on ending the war, many of them will also address Congressman John Conyers' new resolutions to censure President Bush and Vice President Cheney and to create a select committee to investigate and make recommendations on impeachment...

His Popularity is Descending and his Arrogance is Ascending
Ibrahim Ebeid: (www.al-moharer.net)
The popularity of George W. Bush is continuously descending but his arrogance is ascending. The vast majority of the American people are challenging his position on the war of aggression against Iraq, the war that is causing many Americans and Iraqis to die and hundreds of thousands to be maimed for life. His arrogance is taking a new level that humanity has not seen or experienced before. The middle class that is ardently supporting this war has no worries because the children of these stratas of wealthy Americans are not dying for corporate America...

New book describes CIA covert operations before Iraq invasion
Associated Press
A new book on the U.S. government's secret operations describes how the CIA recruited an Iraqi-American anesthesiologist in 2002 to obtain information from her brother, who was a figure in Iraq's nuclear program. Dr. Sawsan Alhaddad of Cleveland made the trip to Iraq on the CIA's behalf. The book said her brother was stunned by her questions about the nuclear program because - he said - it had been dead for a decade. New York Times reporter James Risen uses the anecdote to illustrate how the CIA ignored information Iraq no longer had weapons of mass destruction...

What is the Bush Administration Trying to Hide?
David Wallechinsky
President George W. Bush began the new year by telling the American people that his NSA domestic surveillance program was only used to monitor communications between members of al-Qaeda and people in the United States. He did not address the issue of why he deemed it necessary to bypass the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC) that had, for 24 years, been reviewing and approving such surveillance programs...

Tomdispatch: A Year of Folly Revisited
Tom Engelhardt
...The newly minted "Complete Victory" Award, known in previous years as the "Mission Accomplished" Award, goes to President George W. Bush. It was bestowed to honor his sudden declaration on November 30, 2005, against a backdrop of "Plan for Victory" signs, that we would settle for nothing less than the whole shebang in Iraq, right down to the unconditional surrender of whomever it was we were fighting. The President drove home his point by using the word "victory" a record-breaking 15 times in that speech and once in its title ("President Outlines Strategy for Victory in Iraq"); meanwhile, the administration issued a 35-page "strategy document," supposedly from the Pentagon, on how to successfully fight the insurgency. The document was, in fact, written by Peter D. Feaver, a Duke University specialist on wartime public opinion, and as Peter Baker and Jim VandeHei of the Washington Post commented, was "principally designed to prove" that Bush had a strategy...

PUPPET STATE BROUGHT DOWN BY PRICE CONTROLS?
Lew Rockwell
If you read the financial press, and are watching Iraq news, the warnings are quite ominous. Writes the LATimes: "Iraq's government has sharply raised the price of fuel and other petroleum products this month, sparking discontent and protests and worrying international observers who say the increases could hurt millions of poor Iraqis and throw the country into further turmoil." Says the Guardian via AP: " Long lines formed at gas stations in Baghdad on Friday as word spread that Iraq's largest oil refinery had shut down in the face of threats against truck drivers, and fears grew of a gas shortage." Says Reuters: "Falling oil exports and fuel shortages, especially of gasoline, have raised the level of popular frustration with successive Iraqi governments since Saddam's rule. Iraqis queuing at gasoline stations in Baghdad said they feared the Baiji closure would make their lives even more miserable"...

Following Orders
Mark A. Goldman
...And so, in pursuit of this war, we have suspended the Constitution. Many members of Congress have supported the administration in carrying out illegal acts, rationalizing that such behavior is in the name of national security. That's what Hitler said too. Innocent people have been killed, wounded, tortured, rendered, humiliated, had their privacy invaded, and their lives dismantled all in the name of national security. Anyone who objects can now be put under suspicion and may be targeted for future intimidation or worse. According to members of Congress, nothing this administration does is egregious enough to qualify them for impeachment...

The I-Word is Gaining Ground--UPDATED
Katrina vanden Heuvel, The Nation
...In the last months, several organizations, including AfterDowningStreet, Impeach Central and ImpeachPAC.org, have formed to urge Bush's impeachment. But until very recently, their views were virtually absent in the so-called "liberal" MSM, and could only be found on the Internet and in street protests. But the times they are a' changin'. The I-word has moved from the marginal to the mainstream--although columnists like Charles "torture-is-fine-by-me" Krauthammer would like us to believe that "only the most brazen and reckless and partisan" could support the idea...

Stefan Christoff, Electronic Iraq
Listen to an interview with Ehab Lotayef, who traveled to Baghdad in early December, as an envoy of the Canadian Islamic Congress, in an effort to facilitate the release of Christian Peacemaker Teams [CPT] activists who have been held hostage in Iraq since late November. Until today the fate of the CPT activists remains unknown, as calls for the release of the four anti-occupation activists, James Loney, Harmeet Sooden, Tom Fox and Norman Kember have been echoed throughout the world...
