Desperately Seeking Victory in a War Already Lost
Kim Petersen, www.dissidentvoice.org
... There is no US victory to be gained from the invasion and occupation of Iraq. The clear lesson is that if people steadfastly resist, even the might of the hyper-power can be thwarted. [13] What else can one conclude from the hideously immoral debacle that the US state foisted on the Iraqi people? Iraq was disarmed of all its major weaponry (except for the fighting will of its people); the nation was subjected to genocidal ! UN sanctions from 1990 to 2003, during which time it was constantly being illegally bombed; the Iraqis were violently assaulted by the US-UK’s Shock and Awe; the occupation forces sought to rule through Iraqi proxies; then the occupiers have sought to incite a civil war and rule through divide-and-conquer tactics; the latest attempt is to hope for influence through an illegitimate electoral process. Despite all this, the Iraqi resistance has persevered unceasingly. The American people might learn from the statement of the Iraqi resistance: "We are simple people who chose principles over fear"...

Best wishes to the BBC
Gabriele Zamparini, The Cat's Dream
Dear Ms. Helen Boaden, director of BBC news, Could you please ask Paul Wood to wear a military uniform the next time he says that British and American forces "came to Iraq in the first place to bring democracy and human rights" ? [BBC News at Ten, 22.12] I thought it was for Iraq’s WMD and the imminent threat these WMD would pose to the security of the US and the UK. Who’s lying? (...) Best wishes for the holiday season, Ms. Helen Boaden. I hope you, Mr W! ood and all the BBC will dedicate a few seconds to those hundreds of thousands of children, women, young and old people, innocent civilians who have been murdered also because of your silences and your lies. Anything you will drink to celebrate the new year will have the bitter taste of blood. The blood of your victims....

The Farce Trial Of Saddam
Ghali Hassan, Countercurrents.org
...Like the invasion, the "tribunal" is illegal and has no legitimacy in occupied Iraq. There is overwhelming prima facie evidence to convict George W. Bush and Tony Blair of crimes against humanity than to convict Saddam Hussein. Under the U.N Convention, Bush and Blair are guilty of crimes against humanity, torture, and guilty of wanton destruction of the Iraqi state. The reality is; the U.S. and its allies are not interested in a trial per se; they ar! e interested in the humiliation of all Arabs. Saddam is an Arab and a Muslim. He is used as a symbol to further demonise, intimidate and humiliate Arabs and Muslims. The trial is seen in the West as if all Arab leaders are on trial. It is orchestrated and controlled by Western imperialism. It is a show trial for bullying and intimidation other nations. It "trail" has nothing to do with justice; it is a smokescreen for injustice (...) It is not Saddam who is guilty of crimes against humanity; Bush and Blair are. ..

Iraqi student leader's body found
Nabil Nourredine
THE bound and bullet-riddled body of an Iraqi student leader has been found, a few days after he led a campus march alleging fraud in last week's election, a students' group said. The body of Qusay Salahaddin was found close to a hospital in the northern city of Mosul with his hands bound behind his back and marks of strangling on it, a hospital source said. Gunmen took Mr Salahaddin, president of Mosul University's students' union, from his house last week and b! undled him into the trunk of a car before driving off, said Mohammed Jassim, a friend of the victim. He said Mr Salahaddin used his mobile phone to make last-ditch pleas for help. "Save me, the Peshmerga have kidnapped me," Mr Jassim quoted Mr Salahaddin, a Sunni Arab, as saying before the line went dead, apparently referring to Kurdish militia groups operating in northern Iraq...

Violence rages in post-poll Iraq
Aljazeera.net
Iraq has returned to its violent ways after a brief lull during a fairly peaceful poll - secured partly by an informal ceasefire by Sunni rebels hoping for representation in parliament. Bombs struck Iraqi police and army patrols and destroyed an American Abrams tank in Baghdad on Sunday. The tank was left in flames after a dawn attack in eastern Baghdad. Witnesses said it had been destroyed by a roadside bomb. Also on Sunday, two car bombs, parked by the roadside, we! nt off at lunchtime, wounding three Iraqi soldiers and a civilian in the city centre and three policemen in eastern Baghdad, police said...

Iraqi civilian bombing casualties
Xymphora
There is an interesting article in the Washington Post reporting on the fact that American aerial bombing attacks on Iraq are killing civilians. It is qualified and excused up the wazoo, but still leaves the clear impression that civilians are dying as a result of American bombings. A few comments: 1. Despite the enormous number of bombing runs, this is the first time of which I am aware that the deaths of civilians from aerial bombardment has even been mentioned in the ! mainstream media (the unmainstream media does cover it). The fact that American and British planes have been bombing civilians for years, even before the latest attack on Iraq, is one of the biggest underreported matters in American journalism...

Sunnis on hit list
Syed Saleem Shahzad
A Shi'ite militia has drawn up plans to kill prominent Sunni leaders and eliminate a nascent Sunni political party, according to a document obtained by Asia Times Online from a person close to the Iraqi resistance. The document, which has not been officially acknowledged, carries the letterhead of the Supreme Council of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI), the political party of which the Badr Organization is the armed wing. The SCIRI is headed by Shi'ite cleric Abd al-Az! iz al-Hakim, a leading contender to become Iraq's next premier. Recently, a secret prison allegedly run by elements in the Iraqi Interior Ministry loyal to the SCIRI was discovered...

Is the US State Department still keeping April Glaspie under wraps?
Kaleem Omar
It is now more than fifteen years since that fateful meeting on July 25, 1990 between then-US Ambassador to Iraq April Glaspie and President Saddam Hussein that the Iraqi leader interpreted as a green light from Washington for his invasion of Kuwait eight days later. The US State Department, which is said to have placed a gag order on Glaspie in August 1990 prohibiting her from talking to the media about what had transpired at that me! eting, is apparently still keeping her under wraps despite the fact that she retired from the American Foreign Service in 2002... .

US soldiers kill three Iraqis north of Baghdad
Xinhuanet
The US troops killed three Iraqis in a raid on suspect insurgents in Dhuluiyah town north of Baghdad, an Iraqi-US liaison office in Tikrit said in a statement on Sunday. The statement gave no further details about the incident.A source from Dhuluiyah police told Xinhua that after the US troops stormed several houses late last night, they informed the police in the town of three bodies in one of the houses. "According to the police investigation the US soldi! ers arrested Dhrgham Shiyaa in his house and took him to his neighbor house where they arrested Fuad Abdullah Ubaid, a policeman, and his cousin Ahmed Karim Khalaf, an army soldier, and killed the three,"the source said...

GI Special 3D55: Racism In The Fighting 69th - December 25, 2005
www.militaryproject.org
...Staff Sgt. Anthony Hernandez served as a combat medic with the 69th Infantry Division until he was injured and flown out. The Local 371 member offers a troubling portrait of problems in the military. After serving for 17 years, he was "surprised and shocked" to experience a high level of racism in the famed "Fighting 69th." He described instances such as black soldiers forced to work excessive hours without breaks and pun! ishments imposed on soldiers of color for small offenses, while white soldiers were treated differently. "Most of the soldiers were ready to fight the war," he said. "They were not ready for the racism." Anti- Arab bias is also part of his indictment of the military. "Many soldiers have a negative attitude toward the Iraqi people. Here we are walking into other people's country with a bad attitude! There was an accidental shooting and it was covered up," he added. "They didn't even offer any aid to the injured. Two innocent people killed, and it was just covered up," he said in disgust...

Neocons Use CNN to Continue Psyops Against American Muslims
Kurt Nimmo, Another day in the empire
CNN tells us about a "covert" FBI snoop program to check "suspicious radiation levels outside more than 100 predominantly Muslim-related sites in the greater Washington, D.C., area, as well as various sites in other cities," thus providing more anti-Muslim fodder for the undiscerning American public. "It is a waste of time, it is a waste of resources and it is causing us to be concerned about our citizenship, our con! stitutional rights," Nihad Awad, executive director of the. Council on American-Islamic Relations, told CNN Mr. Awad, however, is missing the point—the Straussian neocons don’t give a whit about the constitutional rights of Arabs in America and this "covert" program, obviously a "waste of time" that will turn up nothing, is not designed to protect us from dirty bombs but rather to further stigmatize Muslims as crazed terrorists...

Iraqi Christians in Peril this Christmas
Juan Cole
...The constitution forged in summer of 2005 and approved in a referendum on Oct. 15 makes Islam the religion of state in Iraq and says that the civil parliament may pass no legislation that contravenes Islamic law. Chaldeans and Assyrians vehemently protested these provisions, to no avail. They were especially concerned that the constitution likely makes it illegal for Muslims to convert to Christianity, and therefore puts Christians in legal peril if they are r! esponsible for such conversions (...) The Chaldeans are deeply worried about their future. They are concerned with the likely impact on their community of emigration (because of the bad security) and of the rise in Iraq of political Islam. They are also profoundly fearful and resentful of evangelical Protestant targeting of their members for conversion...

Baath Party Statement
The Occupation last political episode confronting the non negotiable Armed Resistance choice!

The Baath Arab Socialist Party
Today the December 15th is considered as the ultimate failed episode of the US imperialistic occupation of Iraq according to its political plan and known agenda. It is under the occupation that "the state management law" had been established executing through its puppet authority, and its illegitimate tools and institutions, "parliamentary elections" based o! n battling sectarian grounds and reporting to an occupation imposed Constitution founded on sectarian politics, open to dividing the country. The objective of these elections is to justify and legitimize the occupation after the Occupier's pretexts failed and its lies uncovered one after the other.. and after the US President admitted his"personal responsibility" of the war and the aggression, recognizing the fallacy of all his pretexts for aggression and occupation...

Sunnis mount protests
Aljazeera.net
Hundreds of Iraqis across the country have demonstrated against the initial results of Iraq's parliamentary vote. The demonstrations on Sunday, called by Sunni leaders, also called for the release of detainees and the payment of long-promised compensation for the destruction caused by a US offensives which were backed by the Iraqi government (...) In a petition, demonstrators in Falluja demanded "new elections" on the grounds that the results of the 15 December poll had been fa! lsified (...) Massive demonstrations organised by the National Concord Front, the main Sunni electoral alliance of three parties, took place in Baghdad on Friday as well in a number of cities north of the capital. In Baquba on Sunday, demonstrators representing the alliance held banners saying: "We will not allow Iraq to be divided"...

Lawyer demands probe into Saddam torture claim
Suleiman al-Khalidi, Reuters
Lawyers for Saddam Hussein have asked his Baghdad court for an independent investigation into claims by the ousted Iraqi leader that he has been tortured by his American captors. Chief defence lawyer Khalil Dulaimi said on Sunday that Saddam expects mounting psychological and physical abuse to prevent him from properly defending himself in court (...) "I have lodged a complaint with the court to investigate the crime against my client and! torture against him during and after his arrest," Dulaimi told Reuters in an interview in Amman. "We have asked for an independent medical team to examine the president to examine the bruises inflicted on him which are still there on his body," said Dulaimi without elaborating...

Saddam trial has no legal grounds: lawyer
Gulf Times, Qatar
THE ongoing trial of Saddam Hussain has no legal grounds for several reasons, according to Dr Najuib al-Nuaimi former Qatari minister of justice and a member of the panel of lawyers defending the ousted Iraqi president (...) "The ongoing trial is based on the American pattern of litigation and each and every step of action is American inspired. It has no legal grounds for several reasons including that it is in contradiction to Articles 54 and 64 of the ! Fourth Geneva Convention which stipulate that public servants should not be removed from their positions. The Americans have removed all the functionaries including judges and attorneys of the erstwhile Iraqi government. The laws of the land that were in force should not have been abrogated"...

Christmas in Baghdad
Truth About Iraqis
It is Christmas Eve. I am in an Arab country that has a sizable Christian minority. Some are celebrating Christmas tomorrow. A group preaching inter-faith understanding is holding a dawn mass in a few hours. I cannot help but think of the Christians of Iraq. Although they may have not been as free as they would have liked to be, they were perhaps one of the most privileged Christian communities - save for in Lebanon - in the Middle East. The Baathist order had separated Chu! rch from State, so to speak, although that may have wavered towards the end of the 90s. Nevertheless, Christians were not hunted down. They weren't forced to convert, as some have told me is currently happening in southern Iraq. They weren't forced to veil...

Military Confirms Surge in Airstrikes
Bradley Graham, Washington Post Staff Writer
U.S. airstrikes in Iraq have surged this fall, jumping to nearly five times the average monthly rate earlier in the year, according to U.S. military figures. Until the end of August, U.S. warplanes were conducting about 25 strikes a month. The number rose to 62 in September, then to 122 in October and 120 in November. Several U.S. officers involved in operations in Iraq attributed much of the increase to a series of ground offensiv! es in western Anbar province...
