WELCOME !

This email represents the first of the weekly newsletters you will be
receiving from Austin Greyhound Adoption. Every newsletter will have
in its subject line "AGA - Weekly Newsletter #___" in order that you
might distinguish it from junk mail and/or spam. AGA does not want to
intrude where it's unwelcome, so please feel free to let us know if
you do not wish to receive these weekly emails.

A FIRST ANNIVERSARY

AGA will soon be one year old!!! During that time our seven board
members have worked very hard to establish a firm foundation on which
to build this organization. Along the way we have picked up dedicated
volunteers who have helped us be in more than one place at a time,
staff an event or brought their beloved greys to help educate the
public about the desirability of retired racing greyhounds as pets.
If the board of AGA has been remiss in thanking you personally, please
accept our deepest gratitude for your commitment of time, energy and
financial resources. The board is planning a big anniversary party
during the spring, and as soon as details are available, we'll let you
know in order that you might bring your family to join in the fun.

ADOPTION REPORT

As of our last board meeting in February twenty (20) dogs have been
adopted. The board is extremely happy with this number of adoptions
for a fledgling group, and it only inspires us to set an even higher
goal for our second year of operation. Two adoptions are pending
(Percy and Smoke). Game Boy (a Corpus Christi track dog) is being
taken on a home visit Tuesday afternoon. Applications and inquiries
continue to come in and as a result our supply of dogs is dwindling.
A trip to David & Janelle Peck's farm to pick up some more winner/
losers seems to be looming on the horizon!

MEDICAL REPORT

AGA recently had the joy of laying out quite a bit of cash for the
reconstruction of CTW Smoke Screen's leg (alias Smoke) when his foster
dad, Bob Trapp, returned from work to find his hind leg broken in two
places. After a trip to the emergency vet, a transfer to Great Oaks
Animal Hospital for assessment, and another transfer to an orthopedic
surgeon, the board was informed that the needed reconstruction surgery
was possible. Smoke is a wonderful creature, and the board was elated
to be able to help this guy along in his retirement. Special thanks
go out to Ryan and Rachael Barden who took Smoke into their home for
post surgery care and rehab. They report he's a real trooper and is
healing beautifully. Shari Gray, owner of Smoke's uncle Pete, will be
adopting Smoke when he's ready to leave the Barden home. Shari's a
longtime greyhound lover and supporter of AGA, and we're thrilled that
she's able to open her heart and home to this very special guy.

GARAGE SALE

The garage sale scheduled for March 1st had to be rescheduled, so hold
onto your things for just a little while longer. The Defines' have a
neighborhood garage sale in April, so AGA's tentatively planning to
join in with our stuff. One contributor of sale items has a small
trailer full, so the sale should be a biggie! Our bank account could
use a large transfusion after Smoke's surgery bills! Please consider
joining us to help corral the merchandise and "sell" the greys. Watch
for the date!

UPCOMING EVENTS

AGA's been invited to participate again this year in the Wells Branch
Elementary School Fair. It's extremely well attended, and AGA will
have our sales booth set up for the event. The date is Saturday,
March 29th...times to be announced. We need volunteers for the morning
set up and the evening take down. Volunteers are also needed to staff
the booth during the day. Of course, we always need volunteers to
bring their beautiful greys to show off. This was a big money maker
last year and continues to fall within the goals of AGA, i.e. to
educate the public about the retired racer. This newsletter will have
more details for you next week, but you may contact the event
coordinator, Bobbie Wier, at racer...@sbcglobal.net for further
information.

MEET & GREETS

Two M&Gs are scheduled for March: Sunday, March 23rd at PetSense in
the RR Outlet Mall from 1-3pm (Easter Sunday, coordinator: Jennifer
Define, jennife...@gmail.com ) and Sunday, March 30th at the
Great Outdoors Nursery on South Congress from 1-3 pm (coordinator:
Rachael Barden, cay...@hotmail.com). New adopters are welcome to
attend - your dogs probably miss us (just kidding).

That's all for today! Talk to you next Monday!
