I performed the upgrade from 1.1 to 1.5 and all seemed to go well, but
after about an hour it still doesn't recognize my SD Card. In the
notification bar, there is an icon of a page with a gear that has the
message 'Preparing SD Card. Checking for errors'

The SD Card was recognized before the upgrade and it was the one used
to ADB push the files onto.

Upgrade method: Recovery image

Phone: ADP1 image 1.1

Tried:
- removed SD card (8GB Kingston Class 4) and was able to read it on my
PC via a card reader
- don't know if this is significant, but 'update.zip' is still in
the root dir.

- put in the OEM 1GB SD Card. It was recognized by the phone and I
could browse to it via Linda file mgr

is this a know issue?
Should the update.zip file still be on the root of the SD Card?

While I was writing the above, the 'Preparing SD Card' finally went
away and the SD Card is recognized. Any idea why it took so long?
Does the system scan all the files? The card is about 3/4 full.

Thanks

Sounds like your SD card might have been mildly corrupted, and 1.5
repaired it (that's a new feature in 1.5).

Every time I either restart the phone, or unmount the SD Card (i.e.
when connecting to a computer via USB), and remount it to the phone
the 'preparing SD Card' process runs for about 1/2 hr. It does not
give any error messages.

I have yet to try reformatting the card. Any suggestions on the
format type? (FAT32, or is there something that would work better)

Problem now is sorted. Did two things:

1) reformatted SD Card (FAT32)
2) didn't transfer back Big Planet saved map cache (had >26000 small
map files each in a nested directory structure)

I did them at the same time, so not sure which (or both) fixed the
problem

OK, so the issue might not have been a filesystem corruption issue as
much as a case where the media scanner was taking a very long time
reading all the files on the card.

You might want to try putting those files back in, to see if the
problem comes back, and then putting a .nomedia empty file in the
directory where your tiles are, to see if that makes the problem
disappear again.

Sorry for the confusion and the poor experience.

I'm having exactly the same problem. My g1 updated itself about 830
this morning and at 3pm I'm still getting the message. The problem is
I've lost the micro sd adaptor so am not sure what to do!

Hi, I am also getting the problem this morning after updating at 6am
and now 11pm my g1 is in Notifications still 'Preparing SD card.
Checking for errors'. I have just tried turning off and on the g1,
ejecting the SD card, and plugging into my computer with drivers
installed. I can't see the G1 data contents on the computer possibly
because the G1 is still doing something with it. None of these have
fixed the problem.

The card is the same 2gig card that came with the phone. There's not a
lot stored on it - just a few pics. I have an adapter and might try
copying off the content that way. But how do I fix the problem? By
reformating on my computer, or via the phone? Do I then need to copy
the files back across?

It occurs to me that before the update every now and again the camera
would tell me to insert an SD card before taking any pictures- and yet
there would be an SD card in place. To fix this I'd have to eject the
SD card and put in again. Weird. Possibly has something to do with it.

Any help greatly appreciated

I didn't exactly put the same (potentially problematic) files back on
the newly formatted SD card, but I did re-download map files from
BigPlanet (about the same number and type of files). I still have no
more issues with the SD card. It seems very likely that it was SD
card corruption of some sort.

Will, you will most likely solve you problem by formatting the SD card
in your computer to FAT32. The periodic 'insert SD card' messages are
likely resulting from corruption.

Hi thanks for that. I got it sorted the card must have been corrupted. I used a mac to copy off files and reformat as kept hanging my pc. Then the g1 happily prepared the card in about 10secs.

I have the same problem - it showed up about a day after I did the
cupcake update pushed out by Tmobile. but the other problem is that I
don't have a SD card reader to plug into my laptop to format the SD
card...I'll have to see what I can dig up or borrow.

Has anyone solved this problem with the SD card mounted in the G1?
Seems like the "preparing SD card" activity completely locks out the
ability to access the SD car in any capacity...format, check available
space, etc.

I'm getting similar issues. The problem I'm having, is after the
'preparing SD card' pops into the notification bar, the whole phone
freezes up. I can't even enter my SIM unlock code to recieve calls
etc. It doesn't even start charging when the usb cable is connected.

The phone boots fine without the SD card, and I dont have the micro-
adapter to connect it to my computer.

Any ideas?
