Check that. After I spoke to
George Bachrach this afternoon, he avers there was no implosion and no hazardous
materials, all glass was removed as well as the asbestos well before the
demoltion of the former Goldstein property and the demolition was above board
and beyond the scope of what was required. I said to Mr. Bachrach I would
apologize and having
known him a lot longer than Coleen Salmon, I tend tothinke he's probably
right. I do hereby apologize and retract my statement. He
stated he would never trade his good will to further profit himself.
I stuck my foot in it and don't know what came over me. Perhaps it was the
lack of anyone getting exited about the issue, or so it would appear based on
the lack of anything about it in my email inbox.
Actually I do know what came over me. It was a
sudden flareup of my gradually worsening case of cynicism which leads me to
believe that this neighborhood will not be a place I want to retire in
after spending almost 30 years here with my wife and kids and grandchildren, god
help them.
Perhaps after spending three years on the Allston Harvard
Strategic Plan only to see its recommendations pretty much dismissed, and
after all that work and effort, then being passed over for membership
to the Harvard task force, I'm still a little sensitive. I
could be cured by Harvard's agreement to tone down its height
and density requirements to a more human and neighborly level. Jeez, I don't
like living surrounded by a shabby commercial Western Avenue, but damn my street
sure is mostly nice. Just what does the future hold, and more importantly, who
is doing the holding?
It ain't me, babe.

[AB2006] Goldstein Building Implosion - NO NOTIFICATION
>
>
>>
>> I just wanted to make everyone aware that on Friday,
June 8th, the
>> contractors that were working on the Goldstein
Furniture building
>> imploded the building without notifying the
neighbors. My son is a
>> direct abutter and was home at the
time. He had the windows open
>> because he was not expecting
this explosion. The sound was deafening
>> and the clouds of dust
and debris were enormous. The dust all came in
>> his windows and
we just don't know what toxins are in that debris.
>> They had no
system in place to control the dust at all (no hoses or
>>
tarps). I went down there Friday night and was helping him move
his
>> patio furniture because it was covered in debris (had he known
the
>> building was being imploded he would have moved the furniture
into the
>> house!). I ended up cutting my palms in several
places because there
>> were small splinters of glass everywhere.
I can't believe how
>> irresponsible this company was. They
completely disregarded the
>> neighbors safety and well being!!!
What if the residents had been in
>> the yard? They would have
been seriously injured. I can't imagine
>> that it is legal to
implode a building without notifying the people
>> that live less than
fifty feet from where the explosion is taking
>> place.
Does anyone know what the laws and regulations are regarding
>> this
type of construction? Thank you for your
help.
