Linux for the Weak-of-Heart people like myself is available.
I have painlessly installed Ubuntu on my computer and have most everything intact using the WUBI proggie.
I know that's meaningless to you experts on Linux in this group, but for me it's an achievement. I think I have enough working that I can concentrate on using the 'puter via Linux rather than using the computer to use Linux, if anyone recalls my past poor experience with Linux.

This is precisely why companies like Red Hat and Novell exist. Yes,
anyone can download a debian disk and roll their own Asterisk box.
If I buy from Red Hat, and get a support contract on Asterisk from
Digium I've got all sorts of sue-worthy targets. I'm going to buy
hardware from a vendor like Dell with a support contract attached for

Nice meeting tonight. Many topics were discussed for future meetings,
including Basic Linux 101 and bring your machine for troubleshooting.
Hope we don't have too many machines when the bring your machine for
troubleshooting topic occurs. Steve Alexander has taken the reins for
scheduling future topics. Rick has been given a much needed hiatus

Verizon phones use *228 option 1 and option 2 for program update and program
upgrade, too. The download is minutes free to the client. When the download
is complete, the phone cycles off, then back on again. Verizon recommends
performing the update/upgrade every 2 months to correct software/add new
software to your cell phone. Oops, I haven't reprogrammed since the end of

 Hey Bill,

Which phone do you have?

Is it a blackberry?

If you do *228 one the key pad and then send it, follow the directions
on the recording to upgrade your phones software. This helps alot
with things like the phone believing you are in a roaming area when
your really not.

When I first powered on my HTC 6800, Ya I know it is a windows device,

Whew! This is a long running post. Didn't it begin around September
2007?

Still using Verizon. Very few problems in local area. On my visit to
Columbus, GA (Fort Benning) I had spotty signal dropouts. Couldn't
receive a good signal inside ex-daughter in law's domicile. Had to go
to parking lot to send/receive calls. Replaced 4 year old phone with

Is there such a thing as a Linux based 9-1-1 system? I know, of
course, there are VOIP/SIP products, some even commercial. What I
suspect is that cities would be reluctant to sign a contract for a
system including open source components becuase there is no party to
sue if the open source component, say the under-lying operating

I made the remark about Alltel having a small home service area. I
don't know what sort of agreement my employer has with Alltel, but I
have noticed that soon after I cross the borders of Summit County,
that my phone indicates it is roaming. Since I don't get the bills, I
can't tell if the roaming minutes are any more expensive. Back when

Great ideas Chris. I hope everyone comes with at least a couple ideas
on topics they'd
like to see. I agree that need more "cutting edge" topics, but of
course we have only
a small pool of presenters to draw from (maybe we can draw some
outsiders to present).
So rather than expect an authoritative presentation I hope some people

I would like to see more cutting edge, motivating Linux topics..
Here are some ideas that interest me:
Industrial use of Linux (control & automation)
Linux 911 systems? Has anyone helped a town install one?
New CPU internals: 64 bit CPUs, caching, pipelining, VT / recent advancements
SMP - why it still sucks on Linux?

Yes - let's spend a little time at tomorrow's meeting trying to figure
out what we all want from ALUG in terms of meeting content. But
I still think we need to plan in advance by two meetings. That way
we can get out the word well in advance of meeting night. Right
now it's a pretty iffy thing to invite someone to a meeting without

Ok Thats great Steve, I am thinking we can get some one in the group to talk
on some linux tool or distro experience for tomorrow night. It does not need
to be very formal.
I am still waiting to hear back from a Verizon engineer that i know.
We can have an informal or planning meeting too. Make it a round table talk

OK Rick, I'll take that job, but there is one stipulation; No
presentation can begin until we have two upcoming ones assigned. This
*should* take less than 5 minutes of meeting time and I suggest we start
this policy tomorrow. I'll take up the slack by presenting in either
June or July myself (unless someone else wants these), so the task is to
