If you are having a surge in theft this year, then probably it is a sociological "bubble" and will not be a chronic problem next year. Does this justify the expense and time required to install something that is a temporary need and establishes the implication that this a place known for lack of trust. Education is filled with fads and educators usually susceptible to them. To place your dormitory, (your campus home) under surveillance is very trendy but to solve a temporary "bubble" of theft may be overkill. If the problem is chronic - a noticeable problem - then perhaps you need to approach the problem more from the pulpit rather than from the policing. Once again, as a rule, me thinks cameras are good for boogeymen, not for family members.

We currently have security camera's in the Ad Building. They
are not monitored live for some of the very reasons you have stated here.

One thing as important as student security . . . is student enrollment. If cameras on campus will depress student morale to the point that the students conclude "it is just too much hassle to come to this school", then "discretion might be your better part of valor", "pragmatism your better part of decision." We teachers have the tendency to make administrative decisions as if schools are institutions, inanimate places inhabited by inanimate people with inanimate feelings. Schools, certainly boarding schools, are, in reality, extensions of the home. Parents bring children into the world . . . parents are responsible for making sure their children learn algebra if they need it . . . parents elicit our help when the subject matter gets beyond their expertise . . . we in effect, therefore, become surrogate parents. These are our kids too.
