ILARES® HF Net 6/01/08 1630L 3.905 MHz LSB +/-
The Illinois Section ARES® HF Net meets on the 1st and 3rd Sundays on
3905 KHz at 4:30 PM to test HF NVIS propagation for the emergency. Roll
call of District and Local EC (or their net liaison) is made in the
directed portion of this net, and then EC are recalled for brief reports.
Following these EC reports, OES/IL and ARES® were able to call during the
open part of the net.

Friendly Reminder for EC -
Monthly D/EC reports are due for May on 6/02/08.

Fifth Sunday Special Net Note -
On 6/29/08, the ARRL Field day 2008 will have just ended, and for most,
more than 24 hours of amateur radio Field Day fun and operation is over.
The field stations erected for the 2008 FD have been taken down, and many
FD participants who are in ARES will be hard pressed to be back on the
air from home at 4:30PM to participate in any test. Can't think of a
better test than to make sure your home or emergency station is ready to
go after FD. So, this quarter's ILARES HF test is to check in to this
special county roll call net. Besides, some of us have already had a
significant earthquake and aftershocks in Illinois, so we may not be able
to do much better than that with any simulated EQ test. Suggestions are
welcome between now and this special net, so more may follow in future
QST.

Recruiting ARES -
Bring ARES Registration forms (FSD-98) and your local ARES Roster to
the annual ARRL Field Day - a great place to renew ARES registrations,
and gain new registered members.

Radiogram -
And during FD, I hope that you remembered to send a properly formatted
FD message to the Section Manager (as well as SEC) via another FD station
or the Illinois Traffic Nets, ISN, IPN or IEN.

VOAD -
Volunteer Organizations Active in Disasters -Spring meeting of the
Illinois VOAD in Springfield was recently attended by Alli N9ZBE and
myself, Faith based organizations are well represented in this Illinois
VOAD, along with the traditional disaster services such as the Red Cross
and Salvation Army. State government officials and associated
representatives also attended. Presentations were noted from Scott Gauvin
IEMA (SEOC) and Hero IDHS
The local formation of VOAD units to coordinate many nongovernment
organizations response to local disasters was an interesting new item.
All ARES and EmComm groups not restricted to government support are
encouraged to participate in local VOAD meetings through their local EC,
and Assistant EC leading in local amateur radio group disaster response
are also encouraged to attend for their group or amateur radio club. See
the NVOAD main web pages to learn more at

Communication On Wheels (COW) -
A term often used to describe a rolling communications asset that goes
beyond the typical vehicle mobile amateur radio operators use. Vans,
former ambulances, and other larger vehicles such as converted RV and
special communications trailers, are typical, and are usually moved to
the scene, parked and set up in a location convenient to the response for
longer term emergency operations. If you attended the Princeton Hamfest,
you should have noted the COW by Mark K9ZQ and family at the gate to the
Bureau County fairgrounds today.

IEM Cow -
This describes an NWS Storm Based Warning Verification application of
interest to veteran Skywarn or severe weather spotters and ground truth
reporters. Note the caveat that data is unofficial and should be used for
educational purposes only. You chose a period of time of past warning to
review past warnings and storm reports issued by a Weather Forecast
Office (WFO) for dates after 8 June 2005. The 2008 winter tornado and the
Springfield IL tornados of March 2006 is one such event in the range.

NVIS Propagation -
Tom K9ML EC/IL Bureau County brought a tidbit to the last ILARES HF net,
which encourages use of temporary, easily deployed low mounted wire
dipoles cut to the net frequencies of 3905 and 7230 KHz. Heavyside
predicted that ionospheric reflection would propagate radio waves. Look
it up.

6/01/08 - Princeton Hamfest
Hosted by the SRRC and area clubs supporting this annual cow palace event
at the Bureau County Fairgrounds in Princeton, IL.
